This position is part of "
Silicon carbide photonic integrated circuit (SiCPIC)", a prestigious European Doctoral Network project funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe Research and Innovation Programme under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action (MSCA), Grant Agreement No. .

Collaboration:
The PhD candidate will join an international team of 15 doctoral students across five European countries, partnering with 5 universities and one company. - Research Focus: All 15 PhD projects fall under the project theme of Silicon Carbide on Insulator (SiCOI) devices and integration for applications in classic and quantum optical telecommunication and optical sensing.
This PhD project will take place at PoliTO; additionally, the position includes mandatory international planned secondment and comprehensive training:
- CNRS, Grenoble (FR) (4 months): Characterization of laser annealed amorphous SiCOI.
- FAU, Erlangen-Nuremberg (DE) (4 months): Characterization of laser annealed crystalline SiC.
- Training & Networking: The student will participate in common meetings with the other 14 PhD students in the network, including three dedicated training schools.
As a participant in the SiCPIC project, the PhD student will become part of a team at PoliTO, in Chilab-ITEM laboratory, with expertise in design, fabrication and characterization of photonic devices. The main supervisor will be Full Professor Luciano Scaltrito, Poli To.
Responsibilities and tasks- Design of laser annealing process and system.
- Laser annealing procedure on SiCOI stacks.
- Study of SiCOI characterization techniques.
- Selection and training on the proper characterization techniques.
- SiCOI characterization pre‑ and post‑laser annealing.
- Computer simulations guiding laser parameter optimization.
- Application of characterization techniques (AFM, Raman, SEM, TEM, optical).
- Preparation of scientific publications and presentations.
- Participation in international workshops, meetings and training schools.
- Two‑year master’s degree or an equivalent degree in photonics, electronics, applied physics or a closely related field.
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
- Experience in research design and data analysis.
- Excellent written and oral communication abilities.
- Team‑work and time‑management capabilities.
- Interdisciplinary approach and adaptability.
- A fully funded scholarship under the MSCA umbrella is provided.
- The position is 3 years long, based at PoliTO, within the Chilab‑ITEM Laboratory.
- English language proficiency is required.
