Position Definition:The person filling this position will have the responsibility of assisting the classroom teacher in instructing and supervising students.
Relationship:The Instructional Assistant shall be responsible to the Supervisor of Special Programs and Services.
Qualifications Education/Experience:
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Associate Degree or Highly Qualified Status, preferred.
- Ability to work in a team environment.
- Maintain complete confidentiality.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, patience, understanding, and congeniality for working with students with exceptional learning needs.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Understanding of basic educational terminology.
- Attention to detail and accuracy.
- Regular attendance during scheduled hours.
- Ability to stand, bend, sit, lift, reach, and communicate effectively.
- Ability to ambulate independently.
- Ability to travel to work locations without support.
- Manual dexterity for functions and responsibilities.
- Ability to perform physical tasks such as standing, walking, kneeling, bending, grasping, and demonstrating multi-step physical skills.
The Instructional Assistant will have authority to perform all functions listed below following established policies and procedures.
Functions/Duties/Responsibilities:To perform this job successfully, an individual must perform each essential function to acceptable standards. Reasonable accommodations will be considered upon employee request, in accordance with law.
- Assist in teaching, working with students individually and in small groups on academic, social, communication, practical life skills, and behavior management activities.
- Monitor students and support classroom activities if the teacher is interrupted or involved in other activities.
- Assist in preparing instructional and classroom materials.
- Collect data for logs and IEP progress reporting.
- Perform lifting, positioning, and transferring techniques as needed.
- Support students with personal hygiene, toileting, diapering, changing clothes, and feeding activities.
- Utilize classroom materials for activities.
- Maintain attendance records and perform clerical tasks related to classroom programs.
- Use strategies to increase student independence.
- Communicate with parents through notes, calls, or emails.
- Operate computers, assistive technology, and other equipment.
- Assist with inventory and ordering supplies.
- Answer telephone calls.
- Escort students to various activities and appointments.
- Supervise and assist with self-help skills during meals and snacks.
- Coordinate community-based activities.
- Assist with special projects and programs.
- Supervise outdoor and physical activities and assist with bus/van loading and unloading.
- Use strategies and equipment to meet instructional objectives.
- Implement behavior management strategies.
- Support the development of student independence and confidence.
- Act as a role model for students with exceptional learning needs.
- Exercise objective and prudent judgment.
- Assist related services staff with therapies as needed.
- Participate in emergency evacuation drills and procedures.
- Engage in professional development, maintaining 20/15 hours annually.
