Professional Tutor in Math/Science or Spanish (Part‑Time)

This position facilitates student learning by (a) helping to clarify specific course content and (b) promoting/modeling the use of appropriate study strategies. Areas of tutoring needed are for math/science and Spanish.

Responsibilities
  • Adhere to all tutoring guidelines, as outlined by the Academic Support Center director
  • Meet with assigned tutees in Academic Support Centers or other designated or pre‑approved areas
  • Consult with a tutee’s instructors for advice, guidance, and direction in their tutoring work
  • Conduct in‑person or online tutoring sessions as needed
  • Inform and/or consult with the Academic Support Center director if problems are encountered, or the need arises for assistance relating to a specific tutoring situation
  • Work cooperatively with Academic Support Center staff to deliver a cohesive tutoring program and to respond in a professional manner to diverse student needs
  • Participate in all tutoring training sessions and tutoring staff meetings, as requested
  • Respect students’ rights to confidentiality and follow legal guidelines regarding dispersal of information
  • Act as a representative for the tutoring program within the college community
  • Submit weekly reports and monthly time sheets to the Academic Support Center director as requested
  • Accept tutoring assignments, based on the needs of the college, at one or more of the following: L.L. Polk campus (Polkton), Old Charlotte Highway campus (Monroe), and Lockhart‑Taylor Center (Wadesboro)
  • All tutor training activities and departmental staff meetings as scheduled by the Academic Support Center director
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Under no circumstances should a tutor do a student’s work for him/her or provide copies of specific exams or quizzes previously given by the professor to the student. Tutors will not write papers, review books or prepare work for a student. A tutor may guide, direct and offer assistance in organizing a paper or preparing for an exam, including discussing the types of questions usually asked on an exam, but the student must do his/her own work.

The tutor may cancel and/or terminate the tutoring relationship if the tutee presses the tutor to do his/her work.

Tutors may work a maximum of 27.5 hours per week.

Individual students may be tutored a maximum of three hours per week.

Face‑to‑face tutoring sessions may only be held at the following SPCC locations: the Old Charlotte Highway campus in Monroe; the L.L. Polk campus in Polkton, and the Lockhart‑Taylor Center in Wadesboro.

Tutoring may not take place on the weekend.

Make a minimum of four tutoring presentations to SPCC classes during the beginning of each semester. Locations, dates and times of presentations will be approved by the Academic Support Center director.

Required Qualifications
  • A Bachelor’s degree in the area of tutoring or a closely related area
  • A grade of B or higher in all course(s) and/or academic subject areas for which tutoring services will be offered
  • A cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher in all post‑secondary course work
Preferred Qualifications
  • Teaching/tutoring experience, particularly in post‑secondary courses
  • Other relevant work experience that demonstrates either knowledge of the content or the ability to work with students or the ability to communicate ideas effectively
