Job summary

Performs technical, scientific, or research assignments. Develops theories for understanding, characterizing and organizing information on advanced materials (eg elastomers, thermoplastics, composites, coatings) into a systematic pattern for research into potential new material products. Plans project approaches and routinely formulates work plans, design of experiments (DOE). Responsible for setting and defining technical objectives and assessing results. Plans and executes laboratory research as part of Technology and New Product Development roadmap.

May participate in development of patent applications. May provide guidance in setting up and executing experiments, testing for technicians.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities
  • Conduct research into the structures and properties of materials to obtain information used to develop new products or enhance existing ones.
  • Identify product performance requirements or critical-to-quality attributes and connect those characteristics to chemistry and materials variables that can be modified to meet targets.
  • Design and conduct testing methods to evaluate effects of various conditions on materials. Plan and execute laboratory experiments to confirm feasibility of processes and techniques for materials with special characteristics. May provide instruction and guidance in executing experiments and gathering data to lab technicians.
  • Choose suitable materials and testing methodologies for characteristics in new products, such as resistance to vibration, corrosion, pressure, temperature or impact as dictated by the development project. Design, research and develop novel materials or processes for specific purposes.
  • Compile and analyze materials test results; prepare reports and technical presentations for scientists, research engineers, and technicians. Maintain effective interactions with scientists in other units to leverage innovation achievements.
  • Document lab scale/demonstrator formulation and fabrication to facilitate transfer to scale-up or commercialization. Facilitate technology knowledge transfer to other functions within the organization (manufacturing, engineering, sales, etc.).
