Summary

Under specified supervision, the Civil Engineering Technician-Infrastructure provides technical and field support to professional engineers and construction staff, including managing small Capital Improvement Projects; creating maps on the Geographical Information System (GIS); research; field work; compiling report data; reviews and issues Right-of-Way permits; and maintaining and updating a variety of records.

Under specified supervision, the Civil Engineering Technician-Development provides technical and field support to professional engineers and construction staff, including managing small development projects; researching new development projects; field work; utilizing AutoCAD to update City standard details; researching and revising City Standards and Specifications; and maintaining and updating a variety of records.

Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from level I or, when filled from the outside, require previous and directly related experience.

Civil Engineering Technician I

Under general supervision, the incumbents entering the class have limited directly related work experience. The Civil Engineering Technician I class is distinguished from level II by the performance of less than the full range of duties assigned to level II. Generally, work is observed and reviewed both during performance and upon completion.

Civil Engineering Technician II

Under direction, the incumbents assigned to this class are expected to perform the full range of work assigned to this class and to work with considerable independence and initiative.

Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics. The list of tasks is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY, and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by positions in this class.

  • Maintains and updates a variety of records, including City water, sewer, storm sewer, and street drawings and maps. Compiles data and information on various City reports such as the quarterly goals and objectives reports.
  • Develops and maintains computerized engineering programs including geographic information systems, pavement management programs, and other technical engineering programs. Prepares, assembles and distributes copies of maps, charts, and plans.
  • Performs field inspections for asphalt and concrete sites. Provides assistance to field staff by providing less complicated utility locates and general field inspection when needed.
  • Schedules, conducts, and coordinates pre-construction meetings with Contract Administration, design engineers, contractors, public utilities, and adjacent municipalities as needed.
  • Remains current on the projects and policies of the division. Responds to questions and concerns from the general public, provides appropriate information or refers the question or concern to another staff member or department.
  • Provides technical and field assistance to inspection staff in map retrieval, map reading, field verification, field locating, map corrections, and documentation of such. Provides technical data; drafts reports for flood boundary determinations. Learns to apply new or updated software to job tasks.
  • Performs and verifies mathematical calculations related to surveys, drafting, and basic engineering.
  • Attends staff meetings and provides information.
  • May be required to work overtime.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Infrastructure Engineering Technician:

  • Administers and coordinates small capital improvement projects to ensure conformance with applicable city, state, and federal standards.
  • Provides staff assistance to engineering and capital projects supervisors and managers.
  • Oversees and directs the design of small capital improvement projects, ensuring that the projects are designed within budget and schedule.
  • Coordinates and prepares project design, and reviews construction plans, specifications, and engineering calculations on smaller projects.
  • Assists and coordinates the activities of construction projects; reviews or analyzes and evaluates construction on site for compliance with contract documents.
