Position Overview
The Underwriting Manager will lead the underwriting and financial analysis function within our Employee Benefits division. This role is responsible for managing a team of underwriters and analysts who support our client service and consulting teams by delivering financial insights, renewal projections, funding analysis, and cost modeling for mid-to-large group clients (fully insured, level‑funded, and self‑funded).
The ideal candidate has a strong background in group health and welfare underwriting, excellent leadership skills, and the ability to translate complex financial data into actionable strategies that support client retention and growth.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of underwriters and financial analysts.
- Oversee all underwriting activities, including renewal evaluations, RFP analysis, and pricing of benefit plan designs across medical, dental, vision, life, and disability lines.
- Review and approve underwriting models, cost projections, and funding analyses to ensure accuracy and consistency.
- Collaborate with client service teams to develop renewal and marketing strategies that meet client objectives and align with carrier market conditions.
- Maintain strong relationships with insurance carriers, TPAs, and vendors to ensure competitive pricing and favorable contract terms.
- Provide analytical insights to support producer and consultant recommendations.
- Monitor market trends, underwriting guidelines, and regulatory changes affecting pricing and funding.
- Implement best practices and process improvements to drive efficiency and accuracy within the underwriting function.
- Participate in client meetings and presentations as a financial and underwriting subject matter expert.
- Prepare and deliver management reports, performance metrics, and forecasts for senior leadership.
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Mathematics, Actuarial Science, Business Administration, or related field required.
- 7+ years of group benefits underwriting or actuarial experience; brokerage, carrier, or consulting background preferred.
- 2+ years of leadership or people management experience strongly preferred.
- Deep knowledge of fully insured, level‑funded, and self‑funded plan structures.
- Strong analytical, financial modeling, and Excel skills.
- Excellent communication and presentation abilities, with the ability to explain technical concepts to non‑technical audiences.
- Proven ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast‑paced environment.

- High School Diploma or GED required;
Bachelor’s degree preferred with emphasis in math, statistics, or finance. - Up to 6 years of experience in benefit analysis for group employee benefits.
- Must have the ability to compile, analyze, present, and interpret financial and statistical information to facilitate decision making.
- Must maintain current required licenses and certifications relevant to field of expertise.
- Technical knowledge relative to industry and incorporating contract provisions, renewal and claims processing, plan knowledge and carrier funding.
- Expertise in managing clients with alternative funding arrangements.
- Advanced skill in using computer application software for financial modeling, statistical analysis, and spreadsheet calculations.
- Expert knowledge of state and federal legislation.
- Sets priorities and manages workflow to ensure efficient, timely and accurate deliverables.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate verbally and in writing throughout all levels of the organization, both internally and externally.
- Advanced problem solving and critical thinking skills.
- Must be able to travel based on client and business needs.
