Job Overview

The Sonography Intern (Student II) is an advanced-level intern enrolled in the final phase of an accredited Diagnostic Medical Sonography program. The intern has successfully completed the Sonographer Student I level or equivalent coursework and clinical training. This position reflects progression toward independent scanning competency, demonstrating increased technical proficiency, clinical judgment, and efficiency in the performance of ultrasound procedures. The Student II participates in a broad range of imaging studies and may assist with complex or specialty exams as appropriate to the assigned clinical site.

All duties are performed under the supervision of a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) and in accordance with departmental, hospital, and program standards.

Job Duties
  • Obtain and verify patient and clinical information to ensure appropriate exams are ordered and performed.
  • Enter required patient and exam data accurately into the EMR and departmental tracking systems.
  • Coordinate exam timing and preparation with nursing and other clinical staff.
  • Perform ultrasound examinations under the direct supervision of a registered sonographer, demonstrating developing proficiency in image acquisition, measurements, and documentation.
  • Assist the sonographer and/or physician during procedures, ensuring safe and effective operation of ultrasound equipment.
  • Transfer completed studies to PACS or designated electronic systems for interpretation.
  • Perform EKGs, if applicable for location, and other assigned diagnostic support tasks.
  • Adhere to infection prevention and equipment disinfection protocols in accordance with hospital and departmental standards.
  • Participate in departmental quality, safety, and performance improvement initiatives.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, effective communication, and patient-centered care consistent with hospital values.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the Radiology Department and related service areas.
  • Specific clinical responsibilities and exam types may vary based on facility and location assignment (e.g., general, vascular, maternal–fetal, neonatal, or specialty imaging).
  • The Sonography Student II is an advanced-level intern who has successfully completed the Sonographer Student I phase or equivalent coursework and clinical training. This position demonstrates progression toward independent scanning competency, participates in more complex or specialty studies as appropriate to the clinical site, and functions with increased autonomy while maintaining oversight from a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer.
Education Requirement
  • High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) required
  • Must be enrolled in an accredited Diagnostic Medical Sonography program required
  • Able to commit to required FTE hours per week as outlined in the program curriculum required
  • Maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA required
  • Successfully complete required registry examinations as outlined by the educational program and in alignment with site or departmental expectations required
  • Must be considered a senior-level student as defined by the program curriculum required
