Job DetailsMust be a high school graduate or equivalent. Must have a CPC certification through AAPC or HIMA. Must pass IHPS’s coding ICD-10/CPT exam.
Responsibilities- Apply appropriate ICD-10 diagnosis codes and appropriate CPT codes.
- Enter all applicable charges to appropriate provider and place of service.
- Recognize importance of appropriate use of ICD-10 and CPT codes for medical necessity.
- Understand the difference of each place of service and use correct CPT.
- Utilize all available resources.
- Answer calls politely, identifying self and organization; assist callers with questions.
- Remain current with federal, state, hospital, interdepartmental and third-party carriers, including managed care, HCFA rules and regulations; adhere to guidelines.
- Maintain patient dignity, keep all patient, office, and hospital information confidential.
- Work cooperatively with office staff, health care team, and ancillary hospital departments.
- Contribute and facilitate others in team efforts to continuously improve department functions.
- Make appropriate suggestions for departmental improvements, follow up on outcomes.
- Organize and execute work assignments with minimal supervision.
- Communicate information (written, verbal, electronic) timely, clearly to appropriate individuals; ensure smooth department operation.
- Assist with orientation and development of new employees.
- Attend in-service/in-house programs and outside seminars as requested.

KnowledgeModern operational methods applicable to a billing office; knowledge of clerical equipment, operations and processes; understanding of healthcare insurance regulations, policies and procedures; basic understanding of medical terms, human anatomy, pharmacology, physiology, abbreviations; familiarity with ICD-10 and CPT books; usage of computer systems and various medical forms.
Ability ToMake a great first impression and sustain it; answer multiline telephones; operate a 10‑key adding machine by touch; operate or learn to operate automated systems, personal computers and fax machines; employ tact, diplomacy and compassion with all types of people; communicate well irrespective of the medium; exhibit strong interpersonal skills; follow set outlines and be alert to variations and make decisions accordingly;
maintain organized and accurate records.
