Phlebotomist Laboratory Assistant II
Penn Medicine, University of Pennsylvania Health System invites applications for the Phlebotomist Laboratory Assistant II position in the Penn Medicine Valley Forge location (1001 Chesterbrook Blvd). This role supports our mission of delivering world‑class patient care, advancing research, and educating future leaders in medicine.
As a Phlebotomist Laboratory Assistant II you will be trained on‑the‑job or via a structured Phlebotomy program to draw blood from patients of all ages for diagnostic testing, process a variety of clinical specimens for laboratory testing, and access the associated patient records.
Responsibilities- Correctly identify the stage of growth and development of patients and significant others; utilize knowledge of growth and development when communicating to various age groups; explain appropriate information according to age and developmental level of patients and visitors; identify communication barriers and intervene appropriately; recognize cultural differences and the need to adjust communication styles to meet patient needs (e.g., direct eye contact, touching, transferring);
listen to patient queries, comments and/or concerns and provide appropriate information and responses; introduce self when interacting with patients, families, visitors or other employees. - Enter patient demographics, test orders, billing information into computer systems (EMR/LIS); follow established SOP and age‑specific techniques for collection of biological specimens for analysis; evaluate and solve problems related to that process; correctly identify outpatients and inpatients according to approved protocols with 100% accuracy; perform accurate venipuncture and micro (capillary) techniques in sample collection; may perform specialized collection (e.g., breath alcohol testing, hair collection, EKGs).
- Properly label specimens with 100% accuracy; draw all timed/scheduled samples in a timely manner; observe patients’ emotional and physical state for any adverse reactions to phlebotomy; perform assigned patient‑sample processing activities.
- Follow established SOP for the processing of biological specimens for analysis; evaluate and solve problems related to that process; operate the pneumatic tube system properly and observe all Infection Control policies while handling specimens; provide timely distribution of specimens to appropriate laboratory sections; maintain accurate and orderly log records and worksheets where required according to SOP’s.
- Maintain a safe and orderly work area; demonstrate safe work practices; keep work area free from personal documents and items; answer calls in a professional, courteous, and timely manner; speak to callers in a caring manner; answer questions or refer callers to the appropriate source; avoid putting callers on hold or transferring calls unnecessarily.
- Research phone inquiries regarding specimen collection or test results by referencing available manuals and records and call back promptly; understand collection requirements for special or referral testing, prepare specimens, ensure integrity and correctness of sample, and arrange for dispatch and pick‑up of specimens; keep current with laboratory minutes and documented changes.
- Maintain inventory of equipment and supplies and appropriately communicate need to re‑order before supplies run out; assist with the instruction of procedures and techniques to other employees and students; perform daily temperature checks on rooms, refrigerators, freezers, incubators and preventive maintenance on centrifuges as needed.
- Project an image of professionalism in appearance and conduct at all times; work well with peers and those in authority; work to promote the Penn Medicine BE standards; promote patient and staff relations and display pride in work; comply with Hospital, Laboratory, Safety, and HIPAA regulations; notify Supervisor or Safety Officer of hazards when found; complete annual mandatories on or before the due date;
be responsible for maintaining adequate staffing on all three shifts, weekends and holidays.
