This position provides direct patient care and assists with unit coordination for patients in stable condition. The incumbent performs basic nursing procedures, supports the RN in caring for acutely ill patients, upholds medical asepsis, maintains patient privacy, adheres to hospital policies, and responds to emergencies. Responsibilities also include patient admissions, discharges, transfers, and general unit upkeep. Documentation is performed in the electronic medical record.
The role requires efficient time management and coordination with the Charge Nurse and Care Team Leader.
- Provide, obtain, or perform and document direct patient care and activities such as activities of daily living, skin survey, vital signs, ambulation, specimen collection, intake and output, meal consumption, height and weight, blood glucose testing/monitoring, point of care testing, bladder scanning, transporting patients and medical records, documenting O2, early mobilization, ambulation protocols, and assisting with exams, treatments, and procedures. (30%)
- Participate in quality and patient satisfaction initiatives including bedside shift report, purposeful hourly rounding for safety, falls prevention, hand washing, isolation protocols, and maintaining a clean environment. (30%)
- Accurately document vital signs, weights, I&O, restraints, specimen collection, and other treatments; report changes in patients’ physical, mental, and emotional conditions to nursing staff. (20%)
- Assist in unit activities such as supply stocking, equipment/appliance cleaning, checks, and retrieval. (20%)
- Perform other duties as assigned or required.
Minimum
- High School Diploma or GED
- Limited or no experience; must attend 2 weeks of training
- Ability to read, write, and follow oral and written instructions
- Basic mathematics skills
- Basic computer skills
- CPR – American Heart Association certification
- Act 34 Criminal Background Clearance Certificate
- Act 33 Child Abuse Clearance Certificate
- Act 73 FBI Fingerprinting Criminal Background Clearance Certificate
Preferred
- Acute care experience within the last 3 years
- Current enrollment in an ASN or BSN program; preference for those enrolled in an associate’s or bachelor’s degree nursing program with at least one clinical rotation
