Position SummaryThis is a senior leadership operations position responsible for overseeing and directing daily execution of all aspects of inbound and outbound warehouse operations, fleet services, facilities management (building, grounds, power industrial equipment, sanitation, security), transportation (routing, delivery, backhaul), operations systems, and related third‑party providers. Responsibilities include but are not limited to achieving performance key metrics; expense and revenue management; strategic execution of local and corporate initiatives;
compliance with government regulations; and safety and security of the building, its contents and people. The incumbent will build and develop the operations management team while ensuring a culture of engagement, problem solving, and continuous improvement.
The expressed purpose of this role is to prepare the incumbent for future Vice President of Operations opportunities.
Essential Functions / Responsibilities- The Director of Operations assists the Vice President of Operations in shaping company strategy, culture, and direction.
- Sets strategic direction in alignment with corporate strategy for all aspects of operations.
- Responsible for the wholesome, accurate, efficient, and fiscally responsible daily work and safety of inbound and outbound warehouse, transportation, fleet services, facilities, and beverage services departments and associates.
- Supports the VPO in developing the annual profit plan with direct input from management; oversees budget management, including labor, benefits, supplies, assets, capital investments, depreciation, maintenance, and third‑party contracts; evaluates fiscal metrics and adjusts activities to meet or exceed performance expectations.
- Performs staff management functions: selection, compensation, development, discipline, performance reviews, and terminations.
- Aligns departmental activities, policies, and practices to exceed key performance metrics and customer satisfaction goals; actively supports other departments to achieve their goals.
- Co‑coordinates with the corporate facilities team to analyze growth of the site against facility size to maintain proper storage, receiving, and shipping capabilities.
- Champions efficiency ideas, cost‑reduction measures, and implements changes to enhance operations; identifies problems and proposes solutions to senior management.
- Monitors audits to ensure all inspections and documentation are completed accurately, including food safety documentation, DOT records, ESM, PSM, and others.
- Enforces policies and procedures to drive compliance with insurance pooling requirements and all local, state, federal, and provincial regulatory agencies (OSHA, DOT, FDA, USDA, DOL, CVOR, etc.).
- Monitors the condition and maintenance of the warehouse, fleet, equipment, software, refrigeration, HVAC, fire protection, and office to prevent injuries, product loss, or unnecessary costs; ensures contingency systems are in place for business continuity.
- Oversees emergency response or crisis management activities and develops liaisons with local emergency management agencies; assists safety manager with training initiatives.
- Drives compliance in utilization of systems in line with standard operating procedures.
- Collaborates with merchandising, sales, and marketing to resolve customer or delivery issues; visits customer locations to address issues and assess delivery difficulty.
- Assists in solicitation of new or prospective business by participating in company meetings, presentations, and market‑area activities to develop the company’s recognition.
- Oversees or participates in interpretation, adherence, and negotiation of the collective bargaining agreement; participates in grievance or arbitration proceedings as necessary.
- Maintains associate relations through regular department meetings, open communication channels, and improvement initiatives to enhance engagement.
- Interprets, trains, and consistently enforces company policies and procedures.
