Purpose

The Professional Flight Nurse functions as a member of the critical care transport team and is responsible for the care of critically ill or injured patients transported by the STAT Med Evac system. Responsibilities include patient care incorporating assessment, stabilization, and intervention techniques consistent with standards and protocols approved by the Medical Director. The Flight Nurse is expected to execute independent judgment in order to deliver appropriate care that is consistent with the clinical protocols, when contact with a medical command physician is not possible.

The Flight Nurse functions as part of a team and shares responsibility for the team’s conduct. The Flight Nurse fulfills education and experiential requirements as established by the STAT Med Evac Medical Director, and performs other duties as assigned. Supports and upholds the mission, goals, and objectives of the STAT Med Evac system at all times.

Responsibilities
  • Provide advanced life support to critically ill or injured patients in adherence with established protocols and standards of care; assess online medical command or other resources when appropriate. Participate in developing and completing research projects.
  • Reflect a positive attitude to the customer in a high stress environment at all times, with a clear understanding of who the customer is.
  • Perform all assigned duties, including daily, weekly, monthly, or other duties assigned by the base site manager, including (but not limited to): daily equipment check (vehicle, medications); ensure crew logged onto computer duty roster; participate in shift report from off‑going crew; equipment checks; transport log; medication log.
  • Demonstrate skills, competencies, and judgment necessary to provide patient care in any environment; use educational resources that are required or made available.
  • Respond promptly and efficiently to all requests for service.
  • Report for work well rested, and fit for duty. Adhere to the drug and alcohol policy at all times, including prescription and/or over the counter medicine use.
  • Maintain clean patient environment as well as crew quarters.
  • Participate constructively in the peer‑review driven quality improvement program.
  • Maintain fitness for duty (if qualified as a flight crew member) by adhering to all employee health requirements, including maximum weight, hearing conservation program, and required medical screenings. Report injuries and complete the appropriate documentation, no matter how minor, to a supervisor in a timely manner.
  • Ensure safe operation of patient‑laden stretcher employing appropriate stretcher discipline at all times. Maintain safe loading, unloading, adjustment of head of stretcher, and stretcher movement.
  • Adhere to rules for scheduling, including schedule requests, minimum time, and availability.
  • Demonstrate competency related to pharmacological interventions.
  • Actively participate in the development and training of new staff.
  • Ensure the safety of patients and all others. Utilize appropriate safety channels to report safety concerns, and use tools available to enhance a safe work environment.
  • Collect and promptly process demographic, medical necessity, and other necessary billing information.
  • Select and use personal protective equipment appropriate to the level of the anticipated hazard.
  • Complete all official documentation in a timely manner such as payroll, expense reports, orientation forms, etc.
  • Adhere to the current uniform policy.
  • Ensure patient and family confidentiality and dignity at all times.
  • Document appropriate assessment, interventions, and other pertinent patient information in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrate the ability to establish a rapport with customers; including the ability to create and sustain a positive relationship; regardless of circumstances, environment, or patient presentation.
  • Participate in scheduled and unscheduled outreach activities, representing the UPMC and STAT Med Evac system.
