Research Scientist
Position Summary
The Department of Chemistry in College of Arts + Sciences at Indiana University Bloomington is a diverse and well‑established research community, consistently ranked among the top chemistry programs in the U.S. We are home to cutting‑edge expertise in a wide variety of modern disciplines, including analytical, organic, inorganic, physical, and materials chemistry, as well as biochemistry. Our department is equipped with state‑of‑the‑art instrumentation and facilities, providing an ideal environment for innovative and impactful research.
The Huang Group at Indiana University is seeking to hire a postdoctoral scholar to develop new organic methods for functional small molecules and polymers. The goal of projects in the Huang lab is to tackle critical societal challenges through precise structural control, efficient manufacturing, and the repurposing of molecules across diverse length scales.
The ideal candidate for this role will have a strong foundation in organic synthesis as well as experience in the standard spectroscopic techniques (e.g. NMR, IR, UV‑vis spectroscopy, Mass spectrometry, and X‑ray diffraction) necessary for characterizing new molecules and polymers. Experience with photochemistry (e.g. quantum yield analysis) or polymer synthesis/characterization (e.g. size exclusion chromatography, rheology, and tensile testing) is beneficial but not required.
The Huang Group provides a supportive and collaborative environment for postdoctoral researchers to conduct innovative research. The hired postdoc fellow will gain key technical and professional skills valuable for a career in academia or industry. Routine feedback and guidance for postdoctoral fellows will also be provided by Prof. Huang in group meetings as well as individual meetings to ensure progress towards their future career goals are met.
Responsibilities- Manage and make consistent progress on academic research project(s).
- Maintain good record keeping through lab notebook documentation of experiments.
- Present new results and related literature in weekly group meetings.
- Write up new results for publication in peer‑reviewed journals.
- Assist with setting up and maintaining equipment and instrumentation in the laboratory.
- Mentor graduate students with their projects.
- Ph.D. in Chemistry at time of appointment.
- Experience with organic synthesis or reaction development required.
- Sophisticated experimental techniques with inert atmosphere manipulation of air- and moisture‑sensitive chemicals as well as analytical techniques for characterizing the newly synthesized molecules and polymers (NMR, IR, Mass spec, single crystal XRD, GPC, UV‑vis, etc.) are essential.
- The preferred candidate should also have a deep understanding of organic reactivities and mechanism.
