Senior Manager, Bioengineering & Cellular Technologies

Job OverviewThe Discovery Technology & Mechanistic Pharmacology Team at Johnson & Johnson is seeking a highly motivated and innovative Senior Manager to lead our Bioengineering and Cellular Technologies team. This role will drive the design and implementation of advanced biofabricated tissue models, microphysiological systems, and cellular platforms to accelerate hit identification, lead discovery, lead optimization for small molecules and biologics, and in vitro safety assessment.
The successful candidate will combine expertise in bioengineering, tissue fabrication, and cellular model development with strong leadership skills to build and manage a multidisciplinary team. In addition to supporting assay cell culture needs for HTS and lead optimization, this team will develop cutting‑edge technologies including CRISPR‑engineered cell lines, iPSC‑derived models, organoids, complex co‑culture systems, and primary immune cell platforms to enable high‑throughput compound screening and mechanistic studies.
- Strategic Leadership
- Define and execute the vision for bioengineering and cellular technology innovation to support drug discovery programs.
- Lead and mentor a team of scientists and bioengineers specializing in cell line development, tissue engineering, and advanced cellular models.
- Translational Cellular Model, Assay, and Technology Development
- Design and implement biofabricated tissue models and microphysiological systems compatible with automated screening platforms.
- Oversee development of CRISPR‑edited cell lines, iPSC‑derived systems, 3D models, and complex multicellular models for lead discovery and pharmacological profiling.
- Design scalable assays with translationally relevant functional readouts using high‑content imaging, flow cytometry or other cutting‑edge readout technologies.
- Integrate advanced cellular technologies with high‑throughput‑screening workflows and data analytics.
- Communication, Collaboration & Influence
- Develop compelling scientific presentations and reports for internal review meetings and scientific journals.
- Partner with therapeutic area teams, automation engineers, and data scientists to deliver robust, scalable solutions.
- Represent the team in cross‑functional strategy discussions and external collaborations.
- Innovation & Compliance
- Stay at the forefront of emerging bioengineering and cellular technologies.
- Ensure compliance with all internal and external regulatory and safety standards.
- Education:
Minimum of a Master’s Degree in Bioengineering, Biomedical Engineering, Cell Biology, or related discipline with a minimum of 12 years of relevant experience in a pharmaceutical or biotech drug discovery setting. PhD is preferred. - Experience
- Proven track record in biofabrication, tissue engineering, and advanced cellular model development.
- Hands‑on experience with CRISPR gene editing, iPSC differentiation, and primary cell culture.
- High‑content imaging expertise is a must.
- Knowledge of organ‑on‑chip systems, 3D bioprinting, and microfluidics.
- Understanding of immune cell biology and complex co‑culture systems.
- Familiarity with automation platforms and high‑throughput screening.
- Prior leadership experience managing multidisciplinary teams.
