Middle School Softball Coach role at Highlands School District.
Qualifications- Has the ability to organize and supervise a total sports program.
- Has previous successful coaching experience in assigned sport (major sports).
- The head coach must have substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport and continue to examine new theories and procedures pertinent to the field.
- The head coach must serve as an appropriate role model for student athletes through instruction and actions.
The Athletic Director, who provides overall objectives and final evaluation in conjunction with the school principals.
SupervisesIn several instances, the head coach must advise, coordinate and support a staff of high school assistant coaches and middle school coaches in conjunction with the Athletic Director and respective Principal.
Job GoalTo instruct athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy and physical training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success. The coach should also demonstrate behaviors that lead to socially acceptable character development, self-discipline, self-confidence, and pride of accomplishment in student athletes. Upgrade knowledge and skills through coaching clinics, observations, and consultation.
General- The success of athletic programs has a strong influence on the community's image of the entire system. Public exposure is a considerable responsibility, and community/parent pressure for winning performance must not override objectives of good sportsmanship and mental health.
- The position includes other unusual aspects such as extended time, risk of injury, and due process considerations.
- The job description provides guidance to function; in cases not specifically covered, a coach shall exercise common sense and good judgment.
- Has knowledge of existing system, state and league regulations; implements them consistently and interprets them for staff.
- Understands the proper administrative line of command and refers all requests or grievances through proper channels. Is aware of all meetings requiring attendance.
- Establishes the fundamental philosophy, skills and techniques to be taught by staff. Designs conferences, clinics and staff meetings to ensure staff awareness of the overall program.
- Trains and informs staff, encourages professional growth by clinic attendance according to local policy.
- Delegates duties, supervises implementation and, at season's end, analyzes staff effectiveness and evaluates all assistants.
- Maintains discipline, adjusts grievances and works to increase morale and cooperation.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Athletic Director/Principal.
- Assists the Athletic Director in scheduling, providing transportation and requirements for tournaments and special sport events.
- Helps prepare for events and adheres to scheduled facility times; coordinates with maintenance and school staff.
- Provides documentation for state and system requirements concerning physical examinations, parental consent and eligibility.
- Provides safeguards for maintenance and protection of equipment sites.
- Advises the Athletic Director and recommends policy or procedural changes.
- Mentors athletes to promote character traits of trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.
- Monitors students' grades and conduct.
- Provides guidance and safeguards during practices, games and travel.
- Implements training rules and other sport-specific regulations for athletes.
- Initiates programs for injuries, medical attention and emergencies.
- Completes injury paperwork within 24 hours for disabling injuries.
- Directs student managers, assistants and statisticians.
- Addresses discipline and communicates with parents when necessary; assists athletes in college or post-secondary planning.
- Participates in budgeting with the athletic director and establishes equipment requirements for the next season; operates within the budget.
- Accountable for equipment, charges for lost or unreturned items, and manages inventory and records.
- Marks, stores and identifies equipment; monitors equipment rooms and coaches' offices.
- Ensures athletes access only authorized areas and maintains facility cleanliness and safety of equipment.
- Instills respect for equipment and school property.
- Organizes preseason meetings with parents, coaches, players and guests.
- Promotes the sport within and outside the school and maintains good relations with media, booster clubs, parents, officials, volunteers and fans.
- Manages information released to local media and coordinates schedules, tournaments and results.
