Applicants must have a valid state driver’s license, a safe driving record, and at least two years of unsupervised driving experience with passenger cars or larger. Must communicate in and understand English. Conditional on medical suitability, general eligibility, and background check.
Functional purpose:
Deliver and collect mail on foot or by vehicle under varying road and weather conditions in a prescribed area; maintain professional and effective public relations with customers and others; carry mail weighing up to 35 pounds in shoulder satchels or other equipment and load or unload containers of mail weighing up to 70 pounds.
- Route or case all classes of mail in sequence of delivery along an established route.
- Withdraw mail from the distribution case and prepare it in sequence for efficient delivery.
- Handle undeliverable mail according to established procedures.
- Deliver mail along a prescribed route, on foot or by vehicle, on a regular schedule, picking up additional mail from relay boxes as needed.
- Use a portable electronic scanner as instructed.
- Collect charges on customs, postage‑due, and C.O.D. mail; obtain receipts for registered and certain insured mail.
- Deposit mail collected on the route at the post office upon return.
- Check and correct mailing cards from advertisers.
- Furnish customers with postal information and provide change‑of‑address cards and other postal forms as needed.
- Report to supervisor all unusual incidents or conditions relating to mail delivery.
- Become proficient in casing mail on other routes as assigned.
- Work professionally with other employees in the office.
- As a substitute carrier, perform clerical duties and pass examinations on city primary distribution scheme.
- Perform additional duties such as checking hotels, delivering stamps or other supplies to contract or classified stations, serving at the carrier’s delivery window, registering letters, and making deliveries on other routes as assigned.
