Cumbria Health is looking for a friendly, organised, and patient‑focused individual to join our Reception Team at Glenridding Health Centre on a bank contract basis.

As the first point of contact for patients, you will play a key role in creating a welcoming and efficient environment while supporting clinicians and the wider practice team. The role involves reception duties, appointment management, administration, and liaison with healthcare professionals and external agencies.

Key duties
  • Be the first point of contact for patients arriving at the Health Centre.
  • Process confidential patient information to pass to clinicians.
  • Open premises at the start of the day, set alarm, check heating, air‑conditioning, panic alarms and prepare the premises.
  • Contact patients with appointment times.
  • Keep a watchful eye on patients waiting; alert relevant professional if symptoms worsen.
  • Alert emergency services in case of an emergency and/or gain help from within the department.
  • Coordinate workload to capacity.
  • Carry out equipment checks and report issues to the Practice Co‑ordinator.
  • Work autonomously, managing own workload effectively, referring to line manager when necessary.
  • Receive and make calls as required, handling heavy phone/patient traffic; divert calls and take messages as appropriate. Ensure the telephone system is operational at the start of each day.
  • Scan and attach patient data to electronic records.
  • Pull, file, and photocopy patient paper records.
  • Sort, screen, and distribute incoming internal mail. Process outgoing mail following procedure.
  • Secure premises at the end of the day ensuring the building is fully secured, lights off, alarm activated.
  • Adhere to all Cumbria Health policies and procedures.
  • Participate and ensure own ongoing development.
  • Receive all incoming deliveries, open and distribute accordingly.
  • Maintain a high level of confidentiality and comply with the Data Protection Act. Ensure confidentiality and security.
  • Undertake any other activities deemed appropriate and necessary by the organisation.
  • Qualifications
    • GCSE English and Maths (or equivalent).
    • ECDL or equivalent.
    • NVQ Business Administration.

    • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
    • Excellent telephone manner.
    • Ability to prioritise and manage own workload.
    • Friendly, helpful and can‑do approach.
    • Ability to carry out work accurately to specified deadlines.

    • Previous experience working within the NHS.
    • Previous experience in a similar role.
