About The Role

Our Balfour Beatty Highways business has a fantastic opportunity for a Site Engineer to join our team on the Highways A66 NTP Scheme. This role will be based at Penrith, Cumbria.

Balfour Beatty Highways maintains, manages, and operates major highway networks across the UK and supports local authorities in creating communities where people want to live, work and play. We provide high‑quality asset strategy, management and planning consultancy services to a wide range of public and private‑sector customers. Our focus is to complete schemes safely, efficiently and to a high standard.

As a Site Engineer you will lead and control a site works programme, according to a specific discipline, for both self‑delivered and subcontracted works.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain comprehensive records of site works, including detailed daily site diaries
  • Validate allocation sheets
  • Carry out setting‑out and dimensional checks and understand the limitations of instruments and surveying methods
  • Maintain survey records and produce as‑built drawings
  • Read and understand engineering drawings (reinforcement, drainage, earthworks)
  • Demonstrate strong understanding of construction site safety
  • Understand environmental issues (noise, dust, light, ecological etc), key regulations and the project environmental management plan
  • Supervise graduate and trainee engineers
  • Manage specific site operations, including subcontractors
  • Input into weekly programme and produce short‑term schedules
  • Monitor construction activities for progress against the programme
  • Produce Works Package Plans, Method Statements, Risk Assessment and Task Briefing Sheets
  • Produce and draw a Permit to Dig, including briefing to the workforce
  • Produce and brief daily activity briefings
  • Carry out on‑site safety inspections and hazard identification
  • Contribute to the production of quality documentation, complete and maintain records of check sheets
  • Recognise and raise quality and workmanship issues
Qualifications
  • Highways projects experience
  • 2–3 years experience with a Tier 1 contractor
  • Obtained Degree, or HND/HNC qualification in Civil Engineering or Construction Management
  • Valid UK driving licence and CSCS card
  • Clear communication of the requirements of a safe system of work, ensuring that these are followed accurately
  • Capability of taking ownership of tasks and communicating outcomes
  • Ability to work on own initiative and seek out opportunities in line with the level of responsibility
You Will Have The Following
  • Up‑to‑date knowledge of engineering and industry best practice
  • Clear communication of the requirements of a safe system of work
  • Current driving licence and CSCS card
  • SSSTS or SMSTS qualification
  • Understanding of technical requirements and techniques of setting out and coaching team members
  • Strong knowledge of construction processes in Earthworks/Drainage, Pavement, Comms, Structures, Roadworks
  • Good working knowledge of current H&S legislation
  • Excellent team player, able to work competently and independently without continuous supervision
  • Strong communication, interpersonal and influencing skills
Desirable
  • Basic understanding of temporary works
  • Basic understanding of utilities
  • Basic understanding of lifting operations
  • Working towards professional qualification
