About the Role

We are looking to recruit a Safety and Support Officer to join our Safety and Support Team at Falmouth Exeter Plus. In this role, you will play a vital part in helping to create a safe, supportive and welcoming environment across our Cornwall campuses, working closely with students, staff, visitors, emergency services and wider support teams to deliver an outstanding student and campus experience.

This is far more than a traditional security role. As part of a close-knit and highly respected team, you will combine proactive campus safety responsibilities with frontline welfare and pastoral support, helping students during challenging situations and contributing positively to campus life. No two shifts are the same, and you will have the opportunity to make a genuine difference to the wellbeing and safety of our university communities.

Key

duties and responsibilities include:
  • Conducting foot and vehicle patrols across campus and off‑site accommodation
  • Responding to incidents, alarms, emergencies and welfare concerns
  • Providing compassionate support to students experiencing wellbeing or mental health difficulties
  • Assisting with building evacuations, first aid incidents and emergency response procedures
  • Monitoring and operating security systems including CCTV, Safe Zone and access control systems
  • Supporting with car parking enforcement and traffic management
  • Assisting students and staff with access issues, lost keys and out‑of‑hours support requests
  • Liaising with emergency services and external support agencies where required
  • Completing statutory checks, reports, audits and general campus safety duties

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys working in a people-focused environment where professionalism, empathy and teamwork are highly valued. The role offers the chance to work within a supportive team culture while developing valuable experience in campus safety, welfare support, conflict management and emergency response.

We are committed to supporting professional development and provide opportunities for ongoing training, including qualifications such as:

  • SIA Licence training
  • First Aid at Work
  • Mental Health First Aid
  • ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training)
  • Safeguarding and welfare training

Additional operational and customer service development opportunities

If you are calm under pressure, passionate about helping others and looking for a varied and meaningful role within a supportive team environment, we would love to hear from you.

About You

The successful candidate will have relevant experience in customer-facing environments and dealing with challenging situations, with the ability to remain calm, professional and compassionate under pressure. You will have experience in delivering excellent customer service, good organisational skills, the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a wider team and be able to work a night shift pattern.

You will also demonstrate strong judgement and decision‑making skills, with the ability to assess situations quickly and respond appropriately to a wide range of safety, welfare and operational incidents. An understanding of confidentiality, safeguarding and data protection is essential, alongside a strong commitment to health and safety and service improvement.

We are particularly interested in candidates who can demonstrate
  • Experience of working in customer‑facing roles and managing challenging interactions
  • The ability to de‑escalate difficult situations with empathy and professionalism
  • Confidence in responding to welfare or wellbeing concerns appropriately
  • The ability to produce accurate written reports and maintain clear records

This position is offered on a permanent, full-time basis, working an average of 42.46 hours per week on a 4 on and 4 off rotating night shift pattern, to provide campus support, 365 days per year.

Due to the nature of this role, you will also be required to undergo a Standard Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. Please note that a full valid UK driving licence is required for this role.
