Roadway Engineer | Pensacola, FL
As a Roadway Engineer, you will begin to take on more complex design responsibilities and work more independently on roadway design tasks. You will develop and refine horizontal and vertical alignments, prepare detailed plan sets, and perform geometric, quantity, and cost estimate calculations with limited oversight. Utilizing standards such as DOT Design Manuals and AASHTO Green Book guidelines, you’ll begin applying engineering judgment to select appropriate design criteria and adapt standard practices for project‑specific needs.
You may also coordinate with cross‑disciplinary teams, assist with project scheduling, and support quality reviews, gaining exposure to broader project development responsibilities while mentoring entry‑level engineers as needed.
- Use AASHTO Greenbook, Roadside Design Guide, DOT Standards, and other guidelines and memos to develop design criteria
- Understand and apply geometric and roadside safety policies to design transportation projects including interstates and interchanges, new location roadways, roadway widenings, intersection improvements, bridge replacements, and multi‑modal projects
- Develop signing and pavement marking and traffic control plans in conformance with MUTCD
- Produce plans using Open Roads Designer (ORD)
- Prepare construction estimates
- Develop bid documents including special provisions
- 2 to 5 years of experience
- EI required (PE is a plus)
- Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering
- Good verbal and written communication skills
- Eagerness to learn from and collaborate with teammates
- Experience with FDOT design standards and plan preparation procedures is a plus
- Open Roads Designer (ORD) or 3D modeling experience is a plus
