Communications System Engineer – Maritime Automation
3–4‑month, full‑time contract (1099) focused on preparing our autonomous maritime vehicle for a high‑stakes customer demonstration in March/April 2026. The role will transition to a permanent W‑2 position if successful.
Key Responsibilities- Acoustic System Optimization: configure and optimize acoustic modems (e.g., Teledyne) for demo environments, maximize link reliability, parse acoustic payloads and integrate command/control messages into the vehicle’s autonomy stack.
- Wireless Communications Improvement: implement and test LoRa protocols for reliable, low‑bandwidth backup communications, address RF propagation issues over water to maximize data fidelity.
- Software Integration: integrate communication drivers into ROS2 using C++ and Python, debug scripts between hardware interfaces (serial/UART/USB) and ROS2 nodes, develop synchronized communication notes and fail‑safe logic, explore robust signal‑processing techniques for underwater acoustics.
- Demonstration Execution (Mar–Apr): serve as technical lead for communications during the customer demonstration, manage real‑time telemetry monitoring and troubleshooting.
- Citizenship:
Must be a United States Citizen. - Availability:
Must start immediately (January 2026) and commit fully through April 2026. - Experience:
3–5+ years in marine technology, robotics, or embedded systems. - Hardware Expertise – Acoustics:
Experience configuring and troubleshooting Teledyne acoustic modems. - Hardware Expertise – RF (Desired):
Experience with 2.4 GHz radios and LoRa integration. - Software Stack – C++ and Python:
Strong proficiency. - Software Stack – ROS2:
Deep experience with vehicle control and messaging.
The “Sprint” Setup
- Housing: 100% covered with fully furnished accommodations provided at no cost.
- Rate: $8,000 – $10,000 per month (dependent on experience and fit).
- Conversion:
Potential for conversion to Full‑Time W‑2 (salary + benefits) upon successful completion.
