Scope of WorkUnder general supervision, the Chief Engineer oversees the engineering staff's daily operations. This includes efficient management and maintenance of the hotel facility, covering the structural integrity of the building, all mechanical, electrical, HVAC systems, and related equipment. The Chief Engineer upholds energy conservation practices and implements proactive maintenance programs. By preserving the hotel's physical infrastructure, the Chief Engineer ensures guest safety and facilitates seamless operations across all hotel departments.
Responsibilities- Coordinate and supervise repairs, renovations, and upgrades to the hotel’s physical infrastructure.
- Develop and execute a comprehensive preventive maintenance program for all hotel equipment, including HVAC systems, plumbing, electrical systems, elevators, and fire safety equipment.
- Respond promptly to maintenance requests from guests and staff, ensuring timely resolution.
- Ensure adherence to building codes, safety regulations, and environmental standards.
- Conduct regular inspections to identify and resolve safety hazards and maintenance issues.
- Maintain accurate records of equipment, maintenance activities, and expenditures.
- Collaborate with external contractors, suppliers, and vendors to secure services, equipment, and materials.
- Provide training and guidance to engineering staff on equipment operation, maintenance techniques, and safety protocols.
- Identify opportunities for cost savings and implement energy conservation measures while maintaining guest comfort.
- Assist the general manager in developing and managing the engineering department budget; oversee operational expenses.
- Evaluate vendor proposals and negotiate contracts for favorable terms.
- Advise management on preventive maintenance inspections and corrective actions.
- Maintain safe work practices and uphold daily safety measures.
- Work overtime, on-call, and weekends as required.
- Maintain positive relationships with customers, contractors, suppliers, and employees.
- Follow safety guidelines and protocols at all times.
- Collaborate with team members to achieve project goals; maintain a clean and organized work environment.
- Continuously strive for improvement in both team and personal performance.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or equivalent GED
- 3-5 years of hotel, building maintenance, or civil engineering experience
- 2-3 years of management experience
- Exceptional follow-through, strong organizational and time-management skills
- In-depth knowledge of building systems (mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, fire safety)
- Ability to obtain and maintain government licenses, certificates, or permits as required
- Availability to work during bad weather conditions as needed
- Willingness to work weekends and holidays
- Reliable transportation
- Proficiency with standard office software and mobile devices
- Strong understanding of safety regulations and loss prevention
- Ability to travel to job sites as assigned
- Teamwork, commitment to safety, attention to detail, and strong problem-solving skills
- High emotional intelligence (EQ) with strong relationship management abilities
- Excellent poise under pressure and readiness mindset
- Familiarity with local building codes and environmental standards
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Civil Engineering (preferred)
- Property maintenance certifications (CCE, CME, HVAC License, CPO or similar)
- Knowledge of electrical and hydraulic systems
- Proven managerial or supervisory experience in hotel engineering or similar facilities
- Familiarity with local building codes, safety regulations, and environmental standards
- Physical labor and strenuous tasks; ability to lift up to 60 pounds
- Able to ascend ladders up to 30 feet
- Standing or walking for over 75% of the time
- Work in all weather conditions
- Work near moving mechanical parts; high or precarious places may be required
- Exposure to fumes or airborne particles; outdoor work possible
- Noise may be common; use of oral communication and problem-solving skills required
