Pay Range
Pay Range: $48,921.60-$56,872.40 annually, depending on knowledge and experience.
Minimum Preparation for Work- Graduation from high school or equivalent; and
- Two (2) years of experience as a Code Inspector I or equivalent; and
- Holds a minimum of one standard license as an inspector and/or plans examiner in addition to the discipline for which he/she was hired, and
- Demonstrates 5 years’ combined experience in the field of construction or a related field, building code inspection corresponding to the certification category sought; or
- Demonstrates a combination of postsecondary education in the field of construction or a related field and experience which totals 4 years, with at least 1 year of such total being experience in construction or building code inspections; or
- Demonstrates a combination of technical education in the field of construction or a related field and experience which totals 4 years, with at least 1 year of such total being experience in construction or building code plan inspections.
For the building/housing discipline, pertinent work shall be in building construction and maintenance work. Pertinent education shall be in structural engineering, architecture, or related field.
For the plumbing/gas discipline, pertinent work shall be in plumbing and gas installation, maintenance, and repair work. Three (3) additional years of experience at the journeyman's level is preferred. Pertinent education shall be in mechanical engineering or related field.
For the electrical discipline, pertinent work shall be in electrical system design, installation, maintenance, and repair work. Three (3) additional years of experience at the journeyman's level is preferred. Pertinent education shall be in electrical engineering or related field.
For the mechanical discipline, pertinent work shall be in mechanical systems design, installation, maintenance, and repair work to include work in heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. Pertinent education shall be in mechanical engineering or related field.
NecessarySpecial Requirements
- Possession of an appropriate driver license for equipment operated and any license, training or certification required by law or regulation to complete assigned tasks.
- Possess and maintain an active Standard Inspector license issued by the Department of Business and Professional Regulation in the respective discipline.
- Possession of an active Standard Plans Examiner license issued by the Department of Business and Professional Regulation in the respective discipline is preferred, and may be required for some positions.
This is skilled and highly technical inspection work. An employee in this class works closely with professionals in the building industry, as well as the general public to insure safe, structurally sound, and sanitary building construction. Work involves planning, plan checking, and field inspections to require compliance with municipally adopted codes and laws, as well as laws mandated by County, State, and Federal governments.
Examplesof Work
- Checks plans and specifications for proposed construction of all building and building improvements within the City.
- Makes field inspections to insure compliance with building code and that plans and other laws are followed.
- Participates in the process for the demolition of buildings and structures in the City.
- Enforces numerous City, County and Federal laws.
- Inspects existing buildings for safety and compliance with other laws.
- Secures evidence of violations, and when necessary, assists in the prosecution of these cases.
- Advises and consults with professional designers, builders, plumbers, and the general public in regard to approved design methods, materials, and laws.
- Performs field inspections to examine and evaluate the building structural, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing work performed, and materials used; verifies quality of workmanship, quality of materials used, and compliance with plans, specifications, and applicable codes and regulations.
