Job OverviewThe Victim Advocate provides direct support to victims of crime through each stage of the Criminal Justice System. Victim Advocates act as a liaison between the Assistant State Attorney and the victims involved in the criminal cases prosecuted by the Office of the State Attorney.
Responsibilities- Make initial contact with victims of crime to explain the criminal justice process, refer them to appropriate community resources, and advise them of their rights within the criminal justice system.
- Maintain and document ongoing contact with victims and keep them informed of their right to attend and provide input at each crucial stage of the court hearing.
- Serve as the primary emotional support for victims and provide guidance during the criminal justice process.
- Attend depositions, hold victim office interviews, attend court proceedings, and assist victims with paperwork as necessary.
- High school diploma or equivalency and experience in criminal justice, social science, counseling, public contact, or customer service; or equivalent training and experience.
- Bachelor’s degree may be substituted for experience.
- Preferred background in social work, criminal justice, psychology, or a related field.
- Preferred training and/or work experience in the dynamics of victimization, community services, and crisis intervention.
- Must pass a background check for employment.
- Must provide proof of identity and U.S. citizenship or legal right to work.
- Must practice honesty, confidentiality, and professional conduct.
- Must maintain satisfactory attendance and job performance level.
- Must comply with the harassment‑free workplace policy and safe workplace procedures.
