Job Description
Under the direct supervision of a registered pharmacist, supervisor, and/or director/manager of pharmacy services, the Pharmacy Technician II – Inpatient performs a variety of technical and clerical duties for the hospital-wide unit dose drug distribution system and intravenous admixture program. This position is responsible for maintaining confidential reports, entering and retrieving data utilizing the computer system, preparing intravenous medication—including but not limited to hyper-alimentation and antibiotics—assisting in all aspects of labeling and preparation of medication, assisting with management of inventory including receiving and storing medication as well as preparation and delivery of narcotics, data collection related to medication center review and quality improvement, assisting in monitoring and management of emergency carts throughout the hospital, filling automated medication dispensing system with a supply of unit dose medications, procuring and filling requests for pharmaceutical supplies and delivering supplies to nursing units.
Responsibilities- With the use of an automated dispensing system printout, fill each Med-Select with a 24-hour supply of medications.
- Verify the contents of automated dispensing system stock by checking stock filled by another technician.
- Fill patient medication orders with the correct medication from computer labels prior to each hourly run.
- Fill and deliver narcotic orders to nursing units and ancillary departments according to policy and procedure.
- Deliver checked medications to the nursing units. Refills automated dispensing system to prescribed par levels. Report unusual occurrences to the pharmacists.
- Restock nursing units, operating room, recovery room, and ancillary departments with a limited supply of floor stock medications and supplies.
- Maintain and restock individual filling stations and work areas, including all satellites while contributing to the maintenance of a fixed, minimal level of pharmacy inventory.
- Prepackage and label medications into unit doses from bulk supply.
- Reorder pharmacy supplies from the hospital warehouse.
- Extemporaneously compound products for hospital use.
- Bill/credit patient medications by use of the computer charging system.
- Maintain pharmacy in a clean and organized fashion.
- Maintain clean and sterile environment within the intravenous admixture area, including clean room. Routinely wash with appropriate germicidal solutions all hoods, counters, carts, and all other equipment that will be used within the work area.
- Prepare all IV additive medications using sterile technique as directed by the pharmacist and according to the policies and procedures set by the pharmacy department.
- Generate reports and labels to compile and arrange a work list for the preparation of an adequate number of IV admixtures to cover a 24-hour period.
- Responsible for safe and careful handling of chemotherapeutic medications.
- Assemble materials for the preparation of the daily supply of IVs including medication labels, medications, solutions, syringes, needles, and administration sets and other equipment necessary.
- Label a 24-hour supply of IV bags and syringes with the computer-generated patient name and drug/dose label. Ensure that all IVs are properly labeled with the information deemed necessary by the Intravenous Admixture Guidelines.
- Check finished solutions for clarity and particulate matter and place IVs in proper storage area after the final check by the pharmacist.
- Prepare bulk manufactured IV syringes as per par levels.
- Maintain workload records and statistics as required.
- Routinely check expiration dates of IV medication in the pharmacy department and on the nursing units. Rotate and recycle stock when needed.
Minimum Education
- High School Diploma or Equivalent Required

- Registered Pharmacy Technician State of Florida Upon Hire Required
- Pharmacist Intern State of Florida Upon Hire Required
