Position: Wastewater Operator Trainee or Wastewater Operator I

This position will be filled as either a Wastewater Operator Trainee or Wastewater Operator I. Candidates selected will work at one of these Water Reclamation Facilities:
Central Water Reclamation Facility (CWRF) or Bayou Marcus Water Reclamation Facility.

Job Overview

As a Wastewater Operator Trainee / I, you will perform semi‑skilled and skilled work in the operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment plant under the supervision of higher‑level technical personnel and/or licensed operator.

Key Responsibilities
  • Tours plant and facilities, inspects and observes equipment and machinery.
  • Records readings, adjusts and regulates meters and specialized equipment.
  • Operates motors, pumps, valves, generators, and other equipment.
  • Performs minor maintenance or informs supervisor of major repairs needed.
  • Collects samples from designated points, performs physical and chemical tests, and records results.
  • Calibrates meters and analyzers according to standard operating procedures and Florida Administrative Code.
  • Adds chemicals such as chlorine, aluminum sulfate, polymers, and magnesium hydroxide to influent and effluent to maintain prescribed levels.
  • Uses hand tools and power tools to ensure proper operation and cleans and maintains tanks, filter beds, and other work areas.
  • Reads and records operational data into specified forms and logbooks in compliance with procedures.
  • Maintains facility grounds using lawn tools to create a clean appearance.
  • All other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications for a Wastewater Operator Trainee
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Any combination of education, training, and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Basic level of experience in use of computers.
  • A written test will be administered to determine mechanical aptitude, knowledge of safety practices, knowledge of tools, and basic mathematics. Test scores will be a contributing factor for selection.
  • Valid Driver License.
  • Ability to obtain a Class “C” Domestic Wastewater Facilities Operator License within 24 months of hire (requires completion of licensing coursework within 13 months of hire).
Minimum Qualifications for a Wastewater Operator I
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One year (2,080 hours) of experience in operation and maintenance of equipment and machinery of a wastewater treatment plant.
  • Basic level of experience in use of computers.
  • Valid Driver License.
  • Possession of a Class “C” Domestic Wastewater Facilities Operator License issued by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP).
Shift and Work Conditions

All operators may be required to work rotating shift work (e.g., 28‑day rotation of 7‑3, 3‑11, and 11‑7, or 6 am – 6 pm for two weeks and 6 pm – 6 am for two weeks).

At Bayou Marcus the rotating shifts are 6 am – 2 pm, 2 pm – 10 pm, and 10 pm – 6 am.

Physical Demands

The employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, use hands, reach, bend, lift up to 100 lbs, and work in outdoor weather conditions with exposure to fumes, dust, and chemicals.

Equipment and Knowledge

Light truck or other motor vehicles, two‑way radios, various power and hand tools, lab testing equipment, and other wastewater equipment and machinery. Knowledge of operation and maintenance of wastewater equipment, principles of wastewater treatment, safety hazards, regulations, chemical handling, and equipment control is required.
