Position: LIFT STATION MECHANIC TRAINEE

Position

Mechanic Trainee – Lift Station Division

Job Summary

The candidate selected will start at the beginning of the pay range ($18.22 per hour). This is an entry‑level mechanic trainee position in the Lift Station Division. The trainee will be oriented and trained by a journey‑level Lift Station Mechanic. Each two‑person team receives day‑to‑day work assignments and performance monitoring from a Lead Lift Station Mechanic. Overall work planning, control, and evaluation of job performance are the responsibility of the Manager of Lift Stations and Generators.

Job Functions
  • Assist in daily inspections, maintenance, cleaning, and repair of lift stations, sewage grit removal equipment, sewage grinding equipment, and sewage screening equipment.
  • Pull and replace pumps, repair and replace pipe, valves, and fittings, and operate and maintain lift stations and the associated properties.
  • Perform basic troubleshooting of pumps and treatment/process equipment to identify and correct problems.
  • Keep the assigned Lift Station Mechanic informed of needed repairs and maintenance.
  • Connect and operate portable pumps and generators.
  • Maintain lift station properties with lawn‑maintenance equipment.
  • Clean sewage spills and apply chemicals as required per federal, state, and local laws.
  • Respond to emergency and trouble calls, locate and identify the cause, and perform corrective actions as required.
  • Complete all assigned duties in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Operate light and heavy‑duty trucks, boom trucks, heavy‑lifting equipment, and portable pumping equipment. Operate power generation equipment, lawn maintenance equipment, and various tools as required.
  • Maintain and be responsible for assigned equipment and tools, keeping them in proper working order.
  • May independently perform routine maintenance and repair work.
  • Ensure frequently used parts and supplies are stocked on the assigned truck and restocked as used.
  • Work days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and rotating scheduled shift work, including weather events as scheduled or needed.
  • All other duties as assigned.
Qualifications & Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent. Vocational or technical training is desirable.
  • One year of experience working in a mechanical field, preferably in the wastewater industry.
  • Ability to work days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, rotating scheduled shift work, and weather events as scheduled or needed.
  • Testing for reading comprehension and basic workplace math calculations will be administered prior to an interview and/or job offer; testing scores will influence selection.
  • A good attendance record is vital in this position; attendance records will influence selection.
  • Must be able to read and understand manuals, specifications, drawings, and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Must be able to work as a member of a team and accomplish tasks efficiently and cost effectively.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Possession of a valid driver license.
  • Possession of a Level III Wastewater Collections License from FWPCOA within 12 months from the date of hire.
  • Within 12 months of employment, obtain a Class A CDL driver’s license with tanker endorsement.
  • Within 24 months of employment, complete required coursework and possess Wastewater Collection Technician Class C Certification as issued by the Florida Water & Pollution Control Operators Association (FWPCOA).
Physical & Working Conditions

While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, use hands and fingers, handle or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. The employee must work in unpleasant conditions, near moving mechanical parts, in sewers and lift station wet wells, in contact with raw sewage and associated fumes, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibration.

The working environment is typically moderately quiet but may become loud while operating machinery.

Employment Conditions

Employment offers to all new hires are contingent upon the successful completion of background, motor vehicle and reference checks, drug screening, and post‑job‑offer physicals (which may include pulmonary testing). All applicants are subject to physical assessments as required by the job.
