Skilled tradesmen who perform the work of developing and laying out, fitting, bolting up, assembling and installing pipe when used to form a part of an assembly in connection with ship construction, alteration, and repair specified by blueprints, work orders, or instructions from supervisor or management. In some cases and when the job requires assistance, a tacker-helper will assist the pipefitter.

The pipefitter is responsible for building and/or repairing the complete piping systems in a metal ship. The pipefitter has the primary responsibility for manufacturing and installing interior and exterior components such as foundations, hawse pipes, ladders, mast, racks, railing, sea chest, stanchions, stowages, tanks, trunks, yardarms, and pipe spools, associated pumps, valves and other components which form the complete ships’ systems.

The pipefitter repairs and/or removes damaged ship piping systems and prepares surfaces for welding, burning, and lays out holes for drilling. This work is accomplished using miscellaneous hand and power tools. The pipefitter may also be required to perform as a roll operator, punch operator, shear operator, track burner, drill and saw operator. The pipefitter may also have to arrange for staging, crane service, ventilation, lighting, and support services (air, electricity, and water).

• Typical working hours are 40 hours per week
• Work that exceeds 40 hours is considered overtime
• A 10-minute paid morning break is taken daily
• A 30-minute unpaid lunch break is provided

This function primarily involves standing and walking, and carrying on a constant basis while preparing to complete the assigned job. The worker will have to carry a 50’ welding line when coiled, which can weigh up to 45 pounds. Multiple lines may need to be carried for distances within the working area. The number of times this function is performed in a given day will vary;

a typical day might involve moving to multiple work areas.

Identify and locate specific components, pipe stock, pumps, etc. to accomplish the assigned daily tasks.

It is the responsibility of each individual to provide or arrange his or her own transportation to and from the shipyard.

All Workers Are Required To Wear Safety Equipment Including: Hard Hat, Safety Glasses, Ear Plugs, Safety Toed Shoes, Occasionally Respirators And Fall Protection

Employees are often to perform other jobs that are their own. These jobs could consist of, but not be limited to, assisting other employees in the cleaning and picking up of debris from other areas where work is performed, partnering with employees to complete work with more stringent deadlines, and filling in temporarily for an absent employee.

Pay range
: $25-$35/hr depending on experience
