Position: PARKING ENFORCEMENT METER TECHNICIAN

PARKING ENFORCEMENT METER TECHNICIAN POLICE DEPARTMENT

Hours:

1:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. – Tuesday through Saturday

Enforces state and local parking laws in a professional and courteous manner; organizes available parking and makes prohibited parking areas free from congestion. Maintains, repairs, and installs parking meter devices; and collects money from meters.

However, if you choose to waive that requirement, you must live within a twenty (20) mile radius of city hall and give up 2% of your base pay for five (5) years.

Responsibilities
  • Patrols commercial, residential, and private areas; issues parking citations for improperly parked vehicles; analyzes parking situations to determine if they are in compliance with established guidelines and issues citations to those found to be in violation.
  • Deals with the public in a courteous manner to rectify parking problems and educates the public regarding parking regulations; assists the public by providing information and directions.
  • Diagrams vehicle location as it pertains to the code violation for use as evidence at a possible court hearing; reports and records altercations with citizens.
  • Testifies at bench trials as a representative of the City.
  • Uses measuring devices to determine distance of a vehicle from object or area that would constitute a violation.
  • Communicates through a dispatcher to inform as to availability for service to report traffic accidents, malfunctioning traffic signals, sign vandalism, destruction or malfunctioning of parking meters, stray animals, weather situations, or crimes in progress.
  • Gives tow notices to vehicles suspected of being abandoned or creating a hazard.
  • Provides training for new personnel regarding the general duties of the job.
  • Completes daily report sheets.
  • Assists in maintenance of vehicles by checking fluid levels and performing a basic safety check.
  • Repairs mechanical and electronic parking meters to include: exchanges and returns to shop all meters that are to be checked for problems; checks meters; repairs or adjusts on street meters; exchanges or replaces meters if model is outdated; clears jammed meters; cleans electronic components; replaces broken domes, housings and posts; replaces batteries in new meters; programs rates or rate changes.
  • Utilizes a communicator to retrieve maintenance data from meter and download to computer, audits coin intake from each meter, and identifies each meter with a numerical address.
  • Collects coins and assumes responsibility for large sums of money from meters; prepares bank deposit with all applicable information; places deposit slips in protective bags; after all routes for the day have been collected, bags are tied and ready to deliver to bank.
  • Delivers deposit slips from Bank to City Treasurer on a daily basis.
  • Checks for meter trouble tickets in the Accounts Receivable Department on a daily basis.
  • Installs and removes parking meters.
  • Maintains inventory of parts and equipment; orders parts and equipment for maintenance of inventory.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications Required

Education and Experience:

  • One year certificate from an accredited college or technical school; and,
  • One to two years of progressively responsible related experience; or,
  • Any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.

  • Valid State Driver's License.
