The Rock Island District's Operations Division is responsible for the safe, reliable, and efficient operation and maintenance of a 9-foot navigation channel on 268 miles of the Illinois Waterway, from Joliet, Illinois to near Beardstown, Illinois. The navigable portions of this river and the locks and dams that allow waterway traffic to move from one pool to another are integral parts of a regional, national, and international transportation network.
The system is significant for certain key exports and the Nation's balance of trade. More than 580 manufacturing facilities, terminals and docks ship and receive goods through the Upper Mississippi River Basin, which includes the Illinois Waterway. Annually, the regional project generates an estimated $3 billion of transportation cost savings compared to overland methods. Currently, our District is seeking a primary supervisor for the Structures Maintenance Section of the Illinois Waterway Project Office
, which is responsible for the major maintenance of 8 locks and 7 dams. The Crane Operator Supervisor's responsibilities include:
- Planning and scheduling daily, weekly, and monthly work for subordinates involving coordinating with other departments, establishing priorities, and adapting to emergencies like unexpected breakdowns or damage to lock and dam structures.
- Directing work by assigning tasks, explaining methods, and providing on-site guidance.
- Reviewing work, ensuring productivity, and coordinating necessary equipment and supplies
- Proper use and maintenance of all assigned equipment and floating plant
- Performing administrative duties and performance reviews for assigned employees
This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD, Section 9905 to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.
Minimum Experience Requirement: Specialized experience which includes:
1) lock and dam maintenance;
2) floating plant operation and maintenance;
3) planning, organizing, and direction of various maintenance activities,
4) supervision of groups of workers engaged in multiple disciplines
