OverviewTemporary positions. Substitutes are employed at-will, hired for pre‑established periods during teacher absence. They perform duties of a classroom teacher or paraprofessional, teaching at an appropriate instructional level, following lesson plans and schedules, supporting appropriate student conduct, adhering to the Code of Ethics for Georgia Educators, providing feedback on student performance and behavior, handling non‑instructional tasks, maintaining effective physical settings, keeping accurate records, and supervising students at all times.
Each school's administrator can restrict assignments, and HR can block assignments district‑wide.
- Teach at the appropriate instructional level
- Follow lesson plans and schedule of the teacher or paraprofessional
- Support, monitor, and encourage appropriate student conduct
- Adhere to the Code of Ethics for Georgia Educators
- Provide feedback to the teacher regarding student performance and behavior
- Handle non‑instructional tasks efficiently and use instructional time appropriately
- Maintain an effective physical setting for instruction
- Follow professional practices consistent with school district and state policies in working with students, student records, parents, and colleagues
- Interact professionally and work cooperatively with staff, students, parents, and district personnel
- Maintain confidentiality of students and student records
- Comply with all rules, procedures, and policies
- Enforce policies concerning student conduct and discipline
- Maintain accurate, complete, and appropriate records and files, reporting promptly
- Act in a professional manner and assume responsibility for the total school program, its safety, and good order
- Takes precautions to protect records, equipment, materials, and facilities
- Assumes responsibility for supervising students at all times
- Performs any other duties as requested by district employees
- Education and/or
Experience:
High school diploma or GED required;
Associate’s degree or higher preferred. - Certificate or License: Valid substitute teaching certificate, passing score on the paraprofessional exam, or professional teaching certificate.

Skills:
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos; write simple correspondence; present information effectively in one‑on‑one and small group situations. - Mathematical
Skills:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide. - Reasoning Ability: Apply common sense to carry out detailed but uncomplicated written or oral instructions; deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations; apply sound educational principles.
- Technical Ability: Knowledge of Microsoft Office.
Must serve as a role model to students, have appropriate dress and grooming, be on time, meet attendance standards, and conduct activities safely.
Physical DemandsWalking, standing, lifting up to 30 pounds regularly; occasional lifting up to 50 pounds; ability to crouch or kneel; may need to lift or assist students in an emergency.
Work EnvironmentThe noise level is usually moderate.
