Position SummaryTo function at a professional nursing level using both administrative leadership and clinical expertise in order to assure that comprehensive care and treatment is rendered to resident population, collaborates with the interdisciplinary team in the design, implementation and evaluation of various programs within the unit. Twenty‑four hour responsibility for the continuity of nursing care and the management of the resident welfare.
Responsibilities/ Accountabilities
- Utilize expertise in the leadership role as a manager of an assigned unit.
- Collaborate with the Director of Nursing in maintaining adequate nursing coverage to provide safe nursing care 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, effectively using existing manpower and limiting overtime and agency personnel.
- Develop, implement and evaluate protocols and standards of the assigned unit while following the proper approval channels.
- Assess the work performance of nursing personnel relative to job description, unit standards of care and goals.
- Implement the process of progressive counseling and, when necessary, recommend or initiate disciplinary action based on facility policies and procedures.
- Encourage nursing staff to perform their jobs to the fullest potential.
- Provide professional guidance and supervision to both professional and non‑professional unit staff.
- Conduct periodic meetings on shift and among shifts with staff and interdisciplinary team to disseminate information, develop unit protocols, establish unit goals, initiate implementation and evaluate effectiveness.
- Attend committee meetings as requested.
- Assume nursing administrative responsibilities for weekend and holiday coverage as requested.
- Participate in the development, implementation and evaluation of quality assurance activities for the facility and/or unit as requested; participate in quality improvement reviews as defined by the Director of Nursing.
- Identify educational needs of staff and plan with the Staff Development Coordinator to meet those needs; evaluate program effectiveness.
- Demonstrate, teach and evaluate nursing skills utilized in direct resident care of the unit’s specific resident population.
- Participate with the interdisciplinary team in developing, implementing and evaluating ways to achieve resident care goals.
- Initiate resident‑centered team meetings with staff using problem‑solving approach.
- Serve as a role model in the delivery of direct resident care using the nursing process.
- Assume responsibility for the MDS’s completion on the unit.
- Provide consultation in developing and implementing discharge plans in collaboration with resident, family and interdisciplinary team.
- Evaluate written and verbal communication provided to and received from other modalities regarding continuity of resident care and take appropriate action.
- Participate in developing a program to facilitate continuity of care when residents transfer to other nursing facilities or hospital.
- Assume responsibility for independent study to improve managerial and clinical skills.
- Prepare written reports, review records and participate in needed data collection as indicated.
- Adjust schedule to evaluate staff on evening and night shifts.
- Assume responsibility for assuring daily staffing assignments.
- Participate in facility and/or nursing committees as requested.
- Submit requests for the budget.
- Participate in staff recruitment (assist in interviewing and selection of nursing personnel).
