The role

As our investment in the electricity transmission network continues to grow, we’re looking for experienced Planning Managers to lead the planning and scheduling activity that underpins some of the UK’s most important energy infrastructure projects. These opportunities span our Onshore, Offshore and Development teams, supporting complex programmes that are helping to deliver a cleaner, more secure energy future.

In this role, you’ll provide strategic leadership, technical expertise and clear programme insight across a portfolio of projects. You’ll lead and develop planning teams, work closely with project, commercial, engineering, site delivery and contractor teams, and ensure schedules are realistic, joined up and able to support informed decisions across the full project lifecycle.

You will
  • Lead, support and develop planning teams, creating a positive, high-performing environment and building capability, quality and consistency across a portfolio of Transmission projects.
  • Oversee the development, baselining, management and analysis of robust, logic-driven project schedules across the full lifecycle, from early development through to delivery, construction, commissioning and energisation.
  • Provide strategic and technical planning guidance to project teams, using schedule analysis and practical delivery experience to identify risks, impacts, opportunities and effective mitigation actions.
  • Lead schedule risk analysis, scenario planning and contingency management, producing clear reporting and performance insight to support timely decisions and corrective action.
  • Work closely with project managers, contractors, commercial teams, engineering, site teams and wider stakeholders to establish consistent planning standards, improve schedule quality and support successful project delivery.
You have
  • A degree in construction management, engineering, project management or a related technical field, an NVQ Level 5 qualification, or equivalent relevant experience. Membership of a professional body demonstrating continued professional development would be beneficial.
  • Significant experience of leading and developing planning teams, with the ability to create a positive working environment and motivate colleagues at different levels.
  • In-depth planning and scheduling experience on large-scale infrastructure, construction, energy or major capital projects across complex project life cycles.
  • Strong knowledge of contract planning requirements, with NEC3 or FIDIC experience being beneficial, and the confidence to work effectively with internal teams, contractors and delivery partners.
  • Strong working knowledge of Primavera P6 or similar planning and scheduling systems, with experience of implementing, reviewing and improving complex programmes and planning standards.
  • The successful candidate may be expected to travel between different SSE offices and project sites, with occasional overnight stays. A driving licence is therefore required.
