A recovery support worker provides practical, emotional, and recovery-focused support to individuals with mental health issues or substance misuse problems, helping them achieve independence, social inclusion, and well-being.

Key Responsibilities

Recovery support workers assist service users in achieving recovery goals through both individual and group support.

Supporting social work assistants and social workers in the team to achieve outcomes identified in respect of personalised care planning and risk assessments.

Core duties include:

  • Facilitating and co-facilitating community-based groups such as creative activities, educational sessions, or social inclusion programs, tailored to service users’ interests and needs Providing one-to-one support in various settings including homes, hospitals, hostels, and community spaces, focusing on self-care, daily living skills, and social engagement.
  • Supporting and promoting independence by helping service users access education, employment, health services, benefits, and community resources.
  • Monitoring progress and risk by observing mental and physical health, identifying early signs of relapse, and reporting to care coordinators or senior staff.
  • Maintaining records and documentation in line with organizational policies, confidentiality, and data protection standards.
  • Promoting recovery and well-being through practical advice, harm reduction, and encouragement of positive lifestyle changes.
  • Recovery support workers operate in diverse settings, including:
    Service users’ homes or local community spaces for individualized support

Recovery workers work in collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, including nurses, social workers, occupational therapists, psychologists, and external agencies such as housing or probation services.

Skills & Experience Required

While specific requirements vary, recovery support workers typically need:

  • Experience or aptitude in working with vulnerable adults or young people, particularly in substance misuse contexts.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to build rapport and maintain professional boundaries.
  • Practical skills in supporting daily living, health promotion, and social inclusion Literacy, IT and numeracy skills, often demonstrated through qualifications such as GCSEs or equivalent .
  • Willingness to undertake ongoing training and induction to maintain up-to-date knowledge of recovery practices, safeguarding, and health and safety.

You must have a valid driving licence as this post requires you to travel to a variety of locations across Perth and Kinross.
