Position:
Systems Engineer (Contract) — Peterborough, Ontario site.
BWXT NEC's Fuel Handling and Engineered Solutions group designs, manufactures, develops, tests, supplies parts, and services on-power refueling, reactor maintenance, and nuclear medicine delivery tooling sold worldwide. We are the original designer of automated systems enabling 24/7 on-power refueling of CANDU reactors and aim to solve some of the Nuclear Industry’s most challenging problems. Today, BWXT’s equipment is used in most Canadian nuclear power plants and supports carbon-free energy production and lifesaving medical isotopes.
YourDay To Day
- Define, manage and lead system-level design requirements with the use of formal management tools.
- Define, manage and lead interfaces and scope between discipline-specific design areas (mechanical, I&C and software).
- Prepare and/or verify system-level design documentation.
- Construct process level and/or component level design Failure Modes & Effects Analysis (FMEA) with the design team.
- Lead project-level testing and commissioning documentation or execution.
- Prepare and/or verify project-level deliverables including but not limited to evaluations, reports, and assessments.
- Ensure engineering and product excellence, effective design activity management, on-time/on-budget milestones, defect-free designs, and achievement of metrics.
- Lead by example to ensure compliance with processes (including internal Business Management System), industry codes and standards, quality systems, policy, and contractual requirements.
- Report on status, issues/solutions, improvements, and escalate resource needs as required.
- Contribute to process improvement, technology introduction, and world-class product development and deployment.
- Build customer relationships and ensure market alignment. This role requires interaction with external customers, subcontractors, and cross-functional internal teams.
- Participate in proposal development and review including scope review and estimate preparation; may be assigned Proposal Estimate Lead (PEL) roles.
- Identify project risks, analyze solutions, take decisive action to resolve issues, and communicate with leadership.
- Provide technical direction/decisions and oversight of design activities, including verification of documentation/drawings as applicable.
- Provide assurance of health and safety in all project activities.
- Short-term travel may be required for meetings with clients and stakeholders.
- B.A.Sc. in Engineering.
- Holds or working towards a current PEO license.
- Typically requires 7 years’ experience in design engineering in Nuclear, Aerospace, Transportation, or other highly regulated and process-based design.
- Demonstrated ability with leading complex engineering projects across complete EPC life cycles.
- Experience with project schedules, budgets, financial metrics and project management methodologies.
- Exposure to a broad range of interdisciplinary activities: systems design, requirements development, interface design and testing.
- Exposure to mechanical, I&C, software design and manufacturing departments.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills for diverse audiences.
- Creative problem-solving, strong analytical abilities, leadership potential and teamwork.
- Flexibility to work remotely on short-term customer site assignments.
- Creative and innovative thinking.
- Experience with IBM DOORS or similar tools (e.g., Siemens Polarion, Jama Connect).
- Experience in the CANDU Nuclear Industry.
- Familiarity with CSA Nuclear Codes and Standards.
- Familiarity with ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Codes and Standards.
