Job Description Summary

GE Vernova Power Conversion & Storage is seeking an enthusiastic electrical engineer to join a small team of excitation controls and systems engineers in Peterborough, Ontario, in the application, specification, and design of Power and Control hardware and software for large custom‑built motors, generators, and related equipment. We cover a wide range of industrial applications including Petrochemical, Metals, Generation, Marine, Mining, and Materials Handling and Processing.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with global, multifunctional project teams that include some of the world’s leading machine designers and systems engineers. The position will require some travel and out-of-office work, to a maximum of 25% of a normal work year.

Job Description

Roles and Responsibilities
  • Working from the customer’s written or verbal specifications, specify and apply excitation controls and related equipment for synchronous motors and generators.
  • From a solid foundation of engineering expertise, develop and upgrade existing control and power equipment to the standards and functionality required for today and tomorrow, to keep GE in the foreground of technical innovation.
  • Design and/or apply PLC or other digitally‑based variable voltage power conversion excitation control systems for custom‑built large synchronous machines up to 70 MW.
  • Collaborate with technical and project engineering team members in various global locations.
  • Provide technical support to CAD, manufacturing, test, commissioning, and service personnel.
  • Provide technical support to sales and marketing personnel in the pursuit of new business opportunities.
  • Provide leadership in advancing the competitive position of GE’s large motor and generator products through continuous improvement of product designs and design processes or the application of new techniques and technologies.
  • Work with other GE teams in the integration and development of advanced monitoring of motors and control systems to enhance the sales of post‑warranty service.
  • Identify components related to product obsolescence and qualify potential substitutions & recommendations for product enhancements.
Qualifications / Requirements
  • Bachelor’s or advanced degree in electrical engineering, or equivalent qualifications and experience.
  • 5 years or more of experience in the development of analog and digital power and control systems for industrial drive or power control equipment.
  • 3 years or more of experience in project management, field and installation engineering, fault‑finding, and startup.
  • Professional Engineer registration in Ontario or qualification for registration.
Desired Qualifications
  • Knowledge of large rotating electric machines, esp. synchronous machines.
  • Strong overall technical skills.
  • Ability to achieve excellent performance in individual and team environments.
  • Demonstrated ability for on‑time performance in a high‑pressure work environment.
  • Demonstrated excellent communications and people skills.
  • Strong proactive performer who will establish a network of experienced engineers to widen his/her knowledge base.
  • Solid understanding of electromagnetic theory for reactors, transformers, and autotransformers for drive and power system applications.
  • Proven experience in the application of electromagnetic theory and design practices to the design of large AC machines.
  • Demonstrated experience with the application of GE control and power equipment products.
  • Experience in designing and programming for PLC‑based control and regulating systems.
  • Knowledge of industrial electrical machine applications, such as centrifugal compressors, reciprocating compressors, ore grinding and crushing, wood chippers, pulp refiners, water pumps, etc.
  • Knowledge of Canadian, North American, and international standards for heavy industrial and power systems equipment.
  • Experience with power system analysis, motor starting studies, protective relay settings and coordination, harmonic analysis, and power factor correction.
