Mechanical Equipment Engineer

We are looking for a Mechanical Equipment Engineer for our Peterborough, Ontario site. BWXT NEC's Fuel Handling and Engineered Solutions group is involved in the design, manufacture, development, testing, parts supply, and service of on‑power refueling, reactor maintenance, and nuclear medicine delivery tooling sold around the world.

Our Role

Reporting to the Mechanical Equipment Engineering Manager, the engineer will set the technical direction for the overall project and act as a technical interface point to both internal and external customers. The Mechanical Equipment Engineering department focuses on the design of mechanical equipment and systems for CANDU reactors, including automated and semi‑automated fueling machines, medical isotope systems, robotic systems, and maintenance tooling.

Your Day to Day
  • Provide execution of and lead design, analysis, testing, and commissioning of complex equipment and systems throughout the entire product life cycle.
  • Prepare, approve, or lead design documentation—including technical documents, drawings, and BOMs—as well as technical specifications, development and test plans, and engineering quotations.
  • Prepare and verify 3‑D modelling for purposes of conceptual design, and perform stress analysis.
  • Apply and lead design for manufacturability/assembly (DFMA) techniques.
  • Provide technical support to CAD, Procurement, Manufacturing, Test, Quality, and Commissioning and Service personnel.
  • Participate in and lead internal and external meetings such as design reviews, preparing and presenting technical data.
  • Prepare and/or verify project‑level deliverables including evaluations, reports, and assessments.
  • Lead by example, ensuring compliance with internal Business Management System, industry codes and standards, quality systems, policy, and contractual requirements.
  • Present and report on status, issues/solutions, improvements, and escalation of resource needs as required.
  • Provide overall Project Technical Leadership (PTL) duties for projects as required.
  • Contribute to and lead process change through process enhancement and technology introduction.
  • Build customer relationships and ensure market alignment, interacting consistently with external customers, subcontractors, and cross‑functional internal teams.
  • Take an active role in proposal development and review, including scope review, estimate preparation, and technical and product presentations to the customer.
  • Proactively identify project risks, analyze solutions, and take decisive action to resolve issues and communicate to leadership.
  • Provide technical direction and oversight of design activities, including technical review and verification of documentation and/or drawings.
  • Ensure health and safety associated with the execution of all projects and activities.
  • Short‑term travel may be required for meetings with clients and stakeholders.
Required Qualifications
  • B.A.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Current PEO license.
  • 10 years of experience in design engineering in nuclear, aerospace, transportation, or other highly regulated and process‑based design environments.
  • 5 years of experience in design and development with proven success in a technical leadership role.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead engineering projects and serve as a key design team member for complex projects over their complete EPC life cycles.
  • Experience with project schedules, budgets, financial metrics, and other project management methodologies.
  • Exposure to a broad range of interdisciplinary activities: systems design, requirements development, interface design, manufacturing, and testing.
  • Exposure to interdisciplinary departments such as systems, I&C, software design, and manufacturing.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, understandable by a diverse audience.
