Systems Engineer (Contract)

We are looking for a Systems Engineer (Contract) for our Peterborough, Ontario site. BWXT NEC's Fuel Handling and Engineered Solutions group is involved in the design, manufacture, development, testing, parts supply, and service of on‑power refueling, reactor maintenance, and nuclear medicine delivery tooling sold around the world. We are the original designer of the automated systems that allow 24/7 on‑power refueling of CANDU reactors and aim to solve some of the Nuclear Industry’s most challenging problems.

Today, BWXT’s equipment is being used in most of the nuclear power plants in Canada and is critical to delivering carbon‑free energy production and lifesaving medical isotopes.

Job Summary

Reporting to the Systems Engineering Manager, this role supports the technical direction for overall projects and technical interfacing to both internal and external customers. The Systems Engineering department focuses on overall integration and interfacing across our multi‑disciplinary engineering groups including I&C, software and mechanical engineering. The group focuses on system‑level design for various fuel handling sub‑systems, tooling, medical isotope systems and remote delivery machines.

Responsibilities include requirements management/traceability, process and component level failure modes and effects analysis, testing and commissioning planning and execution, SAT‑based training, and full understanding of customer engineering change control (ECC) processes.

Your Day to Day
  • Define and manage system‑level design requirements with formal management tools.
  • Define and manage interfaces and scope between discipline‑specific design areas (mechanical, I&C, software).
  • Prepare system‑level design documentation.
  • Construct process level and/or component level design FMEA with the design team.
  • Support project‑level testing and commissioning.
  • Support project‑level deliverables including evaluations, reports, and assessments.
  • Lead by example, assure compliance and adherence to processes (including internal BMS), industry codes and standards, quality systems, policies, and contractual requirements.
  • Support process change through process enhancement and technology introduction to achieve world‑class product development and deployment.
  • Support customer relationships and ensure market alignment, interacting with external customers, subcontractors, and cross‑functional teams.
  • May support proposal development and review including scope review, estimating and technical presentations to the customer.
  • Identify project risks, analyze solutions, and take decisive action to resolve issues and communicate to leadership.
  • Ensure health and safety associated with execution of all projects and activities.
  • Short‑term travel may be required for meetings with clients and stakeholders.
Required Qualifications
  • B.A.Sc. in Engineering.
  • Current or working toward a PEO license.
  • Typically 3 years’ experience in design engineering in Nuclear, Aerospace, Transportation, or other highly regulated, process‑based design.
  • Demonstrated ability to support leadership on engineering projects over EPC life cycles with minimal support.
  • Experience with interdisciplinary activities: systems design, requirements development, interface design and testing.
  • Exposure to mechanical, I&C, software design and manufacturing departments.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills for a diverse audience.
