Kleinschmidt has a full-time opening for a Hydrotechnical Engineer to complete hydrology and hydraulic analyses as part of a multi-disciplinary team and assist with the design of hydraulic structures and dams, fish passage facilities, inundation mapping and dam safety projects. This is a unique opportunity to work with Kleinschmidt's internationally recognized team of hydraulic and modelling experts. An ideal candidate would enjoy the challenge of combining sound engineering fundamentals with creative thinking to solve unique problems.
Location is flexible and may be based out of one of our Canadian offices in Peterborough (Ontario), Halifax (Nova Scotia), or in Winnipeg (Manitoba). Other locations may be considered for the right candidate. Our flexibility and core value of relationships allow us to offer employees the opportunity to work in a hybrid environment including working from the office and remotely.
Salary: $95,000-$112,000 based on experience
Who You AreA registered Professional Engineer (or commitment to becoming one) with a
B.Sc. and a minimum of 4-6 years' experience in hydrotechnical engineering or a closely related field. Previous experience in the design of hydraulic structures, hydrologic studies including Probable Maximum Precipitation and Probable Maximum Flood, hydraulic modeling, dam safety, and fish passage engineering work is preferred.
- Knowledgeable:
Knowledge of hydrology and hydraulics discipline-specific engineering principles and ability to apply to projects is required. Direct project experience completing hydrotechnical project tasks, including open channel flow and numerical modelling. Specific tasks could be related to hydrologic and hydraulic numerical modeling, floodplain mapping, dam breach and consequence assessments, dam decommissioning or removal, stream restoration, and/or fish passage engineering. Knowledge of the Canadian Dam Association Guidelines and associated bulletins, as well as applicable provincial regulations, would be considered an asset. - Experienced: 4-6 years' experience in Civil Engineering with P. Eng. registration is preferred. Direct project experience using numerical modelling software such as HEC-RAS and HEC-HMS. Experience using CFD modeling software, such as FLOW-3D, would be considered an asset. Demonstrated experience in the design of fish passage structures and river ice studies would be considered an asset.
- Relationship-focused Team Player:
Experience developing designs in consultation with other disciplines is required. Passion for learning from senior-level staff and other disciplines, while being part of a cohesive team, including delegating tasks to others. Demonstrates the ability to work effectively with a multidisciplinary team while applying engineering skills from analysis and design through to construction. Experience collaborating with regulators, biologists, and other scientists is a plus.
Interest in establishing long-lasting relationships with clients to assist them in solving complex engineering challenges.
- Must be authorized to work in Canada and able to acquire authorization to work in the United States when project needs dictate.
- Must be willing to travel and possess a valid driver's license.
- Must possess and maintain a P.Eng. (or be committed to getting licensed within a year) and be able to add other provincial licenses as required. Kleinschmidt provides support for PDH/CPD and P.Eng.
In this role you will work directly with junior, other intermediate, and senior staff on all stages of project delivery from conceptual designs to issued-for-construction drawings. Project work will require close collaboration with all engineering disciplines, scientists, data analysts, and regulatory experts to develop innovative solutions that support renewable energy and water infrastructure projects. Through these projects you will have the opportunity to gain specialized expertise in hydrotechnical engineering, including floodplain mapping, dam breach and consequence assessments, dam decommissioning or removal, hydropower feasibility, and fish passage engineering.
