Job Summary

Our Medicine Division at North West Anglia Foundation Trust is delighted to offer an exciting opportunity for a Consultant in Stroke Medicine to join our friendly and supportive team. You will be part of a dynamic and forward‑thinking group of Stroke Consultants delivering comprehensive inpatient and outpatient stroke services across Peterborough and Cambridgeshire.

We are a leading hub of innovation in precision stroke medicine, implementing new technologies such as Clopidogrel resistance testing, multimodal point‑of‑care ultrasound, neuro‑intensive care, pre‑hospital stroke video triage, and mobile stroke units. We also run highly specialised services including Young Stroke and spasticity services.

Across NWAFT and CUH, innovation and research are emphasised. In this role you will participate in national and international research initiatives, contribute to service improvement projects and support the training and development of colleagues.

We offer a 10‑P.A. post (including 1:5 weekend daytime work) with part‑time options. Working hours are 9am‑5pm, with on‑call duties.

Key Responsibilities
  • Deliver emergency and acute stroke care, including thrombolysis, thrombectomy and early rehabilitation.
  • Provide outpatient and TIA services and support community teams such as Early Supported Discharge.
  • Attend ward rounds, inpatient referrals and multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings.
  • Lead and participate in clinical research across all areas of stroke medicine, including national projects, point‑of‑care ultrasound programmes and the SECRETO young stroke study.
  • Supervise and train junior staff, medical students and allied health professionals.
  • Contribute to service development, governance and audit activities, ensuring adherence to clinical governance principles.
  • Engage in continuing professional development and support CPD for staff.
Person Specification Education and Qualifications
  • MBBS or equivalent (Essential)
  • MRCP or equivalent (Essential)
  • MD/PhD (Desirable)
Research & Audit
  • Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems (Essential)
  • Experience of conducting clinical audit (Essential)
  • Experience of conducting research projects (Desirable)
  • Publications in peer‑reviewed journals (Desirable)

Experience
  • CCT in General Medicine, Geriatric Medicine, Rehabilitation Medicine or Neurology, plus CCT in Stroke Medicine (or within 6 months of the CCTs at the time of interview) or on the Specialist Register in an equivalent specialty (Essential)
  • Expert clinical opinion on a wide range of adult medicine problems, including stroke (Essential)
  • Full independent responsibility for clinical care of patients (Essential)
  • Stoke subspecialty training certificate or experience delivering comprehensive stroke care including thrombolysis (Essential)
  • Ability to participate in the smooth running of stroke medicine services and lead multidisciplinary teams (Essential)
  • Experience of project management (Desirable)
  • Teaching experience, including supervision of trainees and teaching clinical skills (Essential)
  • Experience of teaching undergraduate students or other professional groups (Desirable)
