A8 ward is a 34 bedded ward specialising in acute medicine and Renal conditions. We provide acute Haemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis and renal biopsies on the ward.

The ward is fast paced and can be challenging but also exciting to work on, with so many opportunities to develop your clinical skills caring for acutely unwell patients. Our team is hard working, positive and friendly. We work together as a team and we pride ourselves on going that "extra mile" for our patients.

The post holder will be enthusiastic about delivering high quality fundamental care to patients under the guidance of a Registered Practitioner in a caring, compassionate and sensitive manner.

  • Acting always in the patient's best interests
  • Protecting and maintaining the patient's privacy and dignity at all times
  • Providing individualised care respecting personal beliefs and preferences
  • Alerting the Registered Practitioner to any change or concern relating to the welfare of a patient in a timely manner

This role includes a mixture of night shifts, day shifts, and weekends to meet the needs of our service.

Main duties of the job

Typical shift patterns are as follows:

  • Shift hours are 07:00 - 19:30 and 19:00 - 07:30, across all seven days of the week (including bank holidays).
  • Your daily duties will be performed under the kind supervision of our registered staff. The main duties may include:
  • Personal care, food, personal hygiene and overall reassurance, comfort, and safety.
  • Help patients move around.
  • Learn about individuals' specific needs and provide help in the most appropriate way.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and enjoyable clinical environment to live and work in.
  • Communicate with patients and their families.
  • Manage stock levels for linen and other supplies.
  • Contribute to the overall assessment of patients by measuring and recording height, weight, and body mass index (BMI).
  • Assist with taking specimens from the patient for the ward or laboratory testing.
  • Contribute to clear and concise paper and electronic patient documentation.

Person Specification Education and Qualifications
  • Maths and English skills equivalent to Level 1 Literacy and Numeracy
  • Ability to complete written and electronic records accurately and undertake competency-based learning
  • For Band 3 appointments: NVQ / QCF Level 3 in a health-related subject or demonstrable equivalent experience supported by completion of a competency-based clinical skills framework
  • Completion of the Care Certificate or equivalent experience
  • NVQ / QCF Level 3 in a health-related subject or equivalent experience
Experience and Knowledge
  • Experience caring for others or providing customer-focused services
  • Experience of working effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Experience of working as a Healthcare Assistant or in a similar care role
  • Experience of caring for patients in an acute setting
Key Skills/Abilities
  • Ability to communicate clearly in English in writing, via IT, verbally and using the telephone
  • Reliable punctual and flexible to meet service needs
