What Does a Kitchen Fitter Do?

As a kitchen fitter you will be responsible for installing and fitting kitchens. Day‑to‑day tasks include removing existing units and measuring for new ones. You’ll need to follow technical plans, work around hidden pipes and units, and may specialise in areas such as tiling, carpentry, plumbing or more.

Key Responsibilities
  • Measuring work areas according to plans
  • Removing and disposing of old units, appliances and decor
  • Investigating the position of hidden pipes and cables
  • Measuring and cutting worktops
  • Building base units, wall units and cupboards
  • Fitting cornices, pelmets, plinths and worktops
  • Cutting out spaces for sinks, cookers and hobs
  • Using a range of hand and power tools
  • Tiling walls and laying flooring
  • Following strict health and safety guidelines
  • Working in clients’ homes or businesses
How to Become a Kitchen Fitter

There are several routes, including completing a college course, undertaking an apprenticeship, or applying directly to an employer for work.

Education & Training Options
  • College or training provider courses such as:
    • Level 1 or 2 Certificate in Carpentry and Joinery
    • Level 2 Diploma in Plumbing
    • Level 2 Diploma in Fitted Interiors
  • Apprenticeships: intermediate apprenticeships in fitted interiors, joinery, tiling or plumbing. Apprentices usually work 30+ hours per week, combining on‑job experience with training.
  • Work experience:

    Previous experience in bathroom fitting, shopfitting, joinery, plumbing or electrical installation is valuable. You can gain experience through schooling, part‑time work or volunteering with a contractor.
  • Certificates:
    Level 2 NVQ in Interior Systems, Level 2 Interior Systems Installer Apprenticeship, SVQ at SCQF Level 6 in Wood Occupations, Modern Apprenticeship in Carpentry and Joinery at SCQF Level 6.
  • National Vocational Qualifications in Wood Occupations (e.g., Site Carpenter, Architectural Joiner, Shopfitter, Bedroom Fitter, Kitchen Fitter) available at Level 2 and Level 3.
  • A GCSE (A*–C) in relevant subjects is typically required.
  • Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card may be required.
