Job SummaryThe Art Teacher is responsible for developing in each student an interest in and the ability to expressing himself creatively in visual terms, utilizing skills and techniques of artistic expression appropriate to the student's interests and abilities; developing aesthetic understandings and appreciations; and discovering and developing talents of students in the field of Art. The Art Teacher is directly responsible to the Principal or his/her designee.
EssentialJob Functions
- Teaches knowledge and skills in art, including crafts, drawing, painting, lettering design, commercial art, art history, and three-dimensional art to secondary students, following the course of study adopted by the Virginia Department of Education and other appropriate learning activities.
- Instructs students in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.
- Provides instructions by which students develop aesthetic concepts and appreciations and the ability to make qualitative judgments about art.
- Demonstrates techniques in activities such as drawing, painting and modeling using standard and teacher-prepared instructional aids.
- Develops instructional plans and organizes class time to provide a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and working time.
- Provides individual and small instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of students with varying intellectual and artistic abilities, and to accommodate a variety of instructional activities.
- Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to provide an orderly and productive studio environment.
- Instructs students in proper care and use of tools and equipment.
- Organizes storage areas and controls use of materials, equipment and tools to prevent loss or abuse, and to minimize time required for distribution and collection.
- Evaluates each student's performance and growth in knowledge and aesthetic understandings, and prepares progress reports.
- Selects and requisitions books, instructional materials, tools, instructional aids, and maintains required records of inventory.
- Plans and presents art displays and exhibitions designed to exhibit students' work for the school and community.
- Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities.
- Maintains an auditable record of student attendance and makes daily reports of students absent each period.
- Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs.
- Attends staff meetings, PTA meetings, and serves on staff committees as required.
- Performs other related duties as requested.
- Must hold or be eligible for a Virginia teaching license with an endorsement in the appropriate subject area.
- Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiated instruction based upon student learning styles.
- Demonstrated ability in decision making, problem analysis, conflict resolution, interpersonal relationships, and planning.
- Knowledge of a wide range of scientific subject areas.
- Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
- Ability to use computer network systems and software applications as needed.
- Ability to organize and coordinate work.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
- Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university - Certification:
Virginia teaching license or ability to obtain a Virginia Teaching license
