Responsibilities
Poplar Springs Hospital is a 183‑bed acute care and residential behavioral health facility. For more than 30 years it has provided full continuum of services, offering treatment for adults and adolescents through acute programs, residential programs, and active‑duty military programs. Located in Petersburg, Virginia, 20 minutes south of Richmond and 50 minutes north of North Carolina, the 25‑acre campus offers a peaceful environment for patients and families.
We have a new opening for a Behavioral Mental Health Tech. The MHT assists in providing safe, effective patient care under the direction of the Program Director/Manager and Unit Charge Nurse. The role involves direct patient care, maintaining a therapeutic environment using HWC, CPR, and S/R techniques, mentoring new hires and students, performing administrative duties, acting as a role model, and communicating effectively with patients and staff.
Hours will vary; applicants must be flexible with availability.

Position requirements: Must demonstrate competency in the listed criteria and ability to learn and develop skills within a reasonable time frame through orientation and training. Flexibility for reassignment to units caring for varied populations (male, female, children, adolescents, adults, dually diagnosed adults) is required.
Licensure/Certification/Registration:
- Valid driver’s license in good standing – strongly preferred
- CPR – preferred (offered on‑site)
- Handle With Care – preferred (offered on‑site)
Education/
Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree – preferred
General requirements:
- At least 21 years old per Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Behavioral Health & Developmental Services
- Patience, tact, cheerful disposition, and enthusiasm
- Good communication skills (read/write/speak/understand English)
- Basic clerical skills and basic experience with office equipment; computer skills helpful
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
- Ability to problem‑solve and accept feedback when warranted
- Willingness to interact with patients of varying cognitive functioning
Skills:
- Human behavior or principles of psychology preferred; knowledge of therapeutic relationships & processes, age‑specific growth & development, limit setting, crisis & behavior management
