Recreational Therapist Assistant-PRN
Poplar Springs Hospital is a 183‑bed acute care and residential facility located in Petersburg, Virginia, 20 minutes south of Richmond. For more than 30 years, Poplar Springs has provided a continuum of behavioral health services for adults, adolescents, and active‑duty military. The campus spans 25 acres and offers a serene, nature‑like setting where patients can flourish.
We are hiring a Recreational Therapist Assistant. The individual will: assist with ancillary therapy assessments and consultations, lead group activity therapy sessions, carry a caseload, develop and implement therapeutic activity programs, and maintain accurate documentation. The assistant will also help develop program strategy, monitor and evaluate outcomes, participate in referral development activities, and support staff training and orientation.
The position requires flexibility in scheduling; applicants must accommodate varying hours and remain available at short notice.
QualificationsPosition Requirements:
- Certified or eligible for Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist
- HWC certification preferred
- CPR certification preferred
Education/
Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, plus certification
- One to two years of prior experience preferred
General Requirements:
- Minimum age 21 per Virginia Department of Behavioral Health & Developmental Services
- Patience, tact, cheerfulness, and enthusiasm
- Strong communication skills in reading, writing, speaking, and understanding English
- Basic clerical skills and experience with office equipment (telephone, copy machine, fax, etc.)
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.)
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions
- Problem‑solving ability and openness to feedback
- Willingness to interact with patients of varying cognitive functioning
- Teamwork skills within a multidisciplinary activity‑therapy team
- Strong time‑management and multitasking abilities
