Job Summary:
The Social Worker advances this vision by working collaboratively with students, families, schools, community partners, and division staff to identify and reduce nonacademic barriers that affect student attendance, engagement, behavior, well-being, and academic progress. The Social Worker provides targeted, school-based social work services and family support for students served in Title I schools. The position strengthens the connection among home, school, and community;
supports attendance and reengagement efforts; coordinates access to community-based resources; and helps schools create welcoming, safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environments where students can fully participate in their education. The Social Worker will provide consultation, short-term student and family support, referral coordination, community outreach, and data-informed intervention planning. The position will work closely with school leadership, attendance teams, school counselors, psychologists, special education personnel, and other student-support staff to ensure that students and families receive timely, coordinated, and responsive assistance.
Essential Job Functions:
- Conduct outreach to students and families to identify barriers affecting attendance, enrollment, school engagement, behavior, academic progress, and access to school-based services and supports.
- Collaborate with principals, school leadership teams, attendance teams, counselors, psychologists, special education staff, teachers, and other personnel to develop, implement, and monitor student-centered strategies that improve attendance, engagement, behavior, and academic outcomes.
- Participate in attendance intervention meetings, family conferences, student-support meetings, School-Based Intervention Team meetings, and other multidisciplinary meetings, as assigned.
- Support Title I schools in identifying students who are chronically absent, disengaged, highly mobile, experiencing significant family or economic challenges, or otherwise at risk of not fully benefiting from the instructional program.
- Gather relevant social, developmental, family, attendance, and environmental information to assist school teams in understanding student needs and developing appropriate interventions, referrals, and supports.
- Provide short-term individual, group, and family support; consultation; crisis-responsive assistance; and referral services within the employee's education, training, experience, professional credentials, and division procedures.
- Assist families in navigating school processes, enrollment-related concerns, attendance expectations, referrals, available supports, and community resources.
- Connect students and families with appropriate community-based services and resources, including behavioral and mental-health providers, health care services, food assistance, housing resources, transportation supports, family-support programs, youth-serving organizations, and other agencies.
- Develop and maintain productive partnerships with community agencies, nonprofit organizations, local government partners, service providers, and other stakeholders that strengthen support for Petersburg City Public Schools students and families.
- Collaborate with school teams to identify and implement Tier 2 and Tier 3 interventions through the division's Multi-Tiered Systems of Support framework to improve student attendance, social-emotional functioning, behavior, engagement, and access to learning.
