Automation & Controls Engineer II – Johns Manville, Phenix City, AL
Job OverviewKey member of the plant leadership team, focusing on electrical and automation systems across existing operations and new projects. Supports plant operations, growth targets, and plant relocations.
LocationPhenix City, AL – 24/5 to 24/7 manufacturing facility.
Pay Range$96,900–$133,200 annual base salary. Eligible for incentive bonus.
Day‑to‑Day Responsibilities- Maintain safety, product quality, and manufacturing effectiveness through daily troubleshooting.
- Drive continuous improvement of product quality and develop product specifications.
- Support safety, environmental, and compliance initiatives.
- Create manufacturing operations vision aligned with plant goals.
- Engage with employees in a flat organization for engagement and focus.
- Diagnose and solve complex problems.
- Participate in daily management and staff meetings.
- Perform related duties and collaborate with Plant Leadership to achieve business goals.
- Prepare for occasional shift or schedule changes based on project needs.
- Stay current with JM standards and propose equipment life‑cycle plans.
- Identify opportunities for efficiency through automation.
- Standardize common parts and systems.
- Document legacy and new systems thoroughly.
- Support corporate IT on plant infrastructure projects.
- Coordinate plant HR/Safety on security access and camera systems.
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
- Minimum 3 years of controls engineering in manufacturing.
- Proficiency with Allen‑Bradley PLC/HMI, VFD, servo, robotic platforms.
- Knowledge of NFPA 70E, multiple communication networks.
- Strong problem‑solving and analytical skills.
- Experience managing concurrent projects; lead major (> $1 M) projects.
- Effective written and verbal communication, team collaboration.
- Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook.
- Experience with Fanuc robotics, Cognex vision, Wonderware, Genetec.
- Lean and Six Sigma methodology.
- AutoCAD/Visio, ISO or structured business systems.
- SAP or other ERP experience.
Can reach, climb, and handle equipment up to 50 lb; required to work in hot, humid, or cold environments; wear personal protective equipment.
Work EnvironmentIndustrial manufacturing plant with high noise, vibration, and potential fumes; requires safety gear and compliance.
