Success in this Role

A Safety Representative is expected to stop work when they observe an imminent danger or serious safety violation, while promptly notifying and work closely with appropriate Superintendent, General Foreman, PE, Safety Coordinator/Manager, Project Engineer, and Project Manager

They should not be treated simply as the person who fills out safety paperwork, Their primary responsibility is preventing injuries by being present where the work is occurring. For a structural-steel contractor with approximately 60 employees, expect the Safety Representative to spend the majority of their working day in the field, rather than behind a desk. A good practical division would be:
Field: 70–80% Documentation/meetings: 20–30%

The Safety Representative should work closely with the Superintendent, GFs, foremen, PM/PE team, and Safety Coordinator/Manager rather than functioning independently from the project chain of command.
