Adult Education Instructor – Part‑time
Friendly House, Inc., is a 501(c)(3) non‑profit agency located in Phoenix, Arizona dedicated to providing educational and social‑service programming for low‑income individuals, families, and diverse communities. The organization also operates a charter school, Academia del Pueblo, fostering a culture of high expectations for students from diverse cultures.
Location: Phoenix, AZ (On‑site; 4 days per week, M‑TH 5:30 PM to 8 PM)
Employment type: Part‑time
Salary: $20–$22 per hour (based on experience)
Job Summary: The Adult Education Instructor plans, organizes, develops, and delivers student‑centered lessons across core subjects—including listening, speaking, reading, math, science, social studies, and writing—for adult learners in the Adult Education programs. The instructor administers standardized assessments, monitors progress, sets goals, maintains attendance records, and supports a professional learning community.
Responsibilities- Ensure daily attendance sheets are submitted.
- Assist with Adult Education Department oversight of program operations, including intake, orientation, assessment, and data processes.
- Submit monthly outcome reports with student success and challenge data.
- Analyze data to improve student learning and teacher effectiveness.
- Develop lesson plans aligned with program standards.
- Monitor students’ progress on a regular basis.
- Diagnose, assess, and evaluate students’ strengths, functional levels, and readiness to pass exams.
- Aid with progress testing and new‑student orientation.
- Observe teaching staff and recommend techniques and technologies to strengthen instruction.
- Assist with registration and follow‑up communication with students.
- Perform other instructional duties as needed.
- Minimum education:
Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Education or a related field, and/or an Adult Education Teaching Certificate. - Effective use of electronic communication (e‑mail, team collaboration software, etc.).
- IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card, or ability to obtain upon hire.
- 1 year of teaching experience and/or training (or an equivalent combination).
- Attend any or all required training seminars or professional development trainings upon hiring.
- TESOL/Adult Education degree and/or certification from a state licensing agency.
- Two years of experience teaching ESL (English as a Second Language) or GED Prep to adults in a classroom setting.
- Ability to work with diverse backgrounds to support students.
Sit or stand for long periods of time.
Work EnvironmentProspective student walk‑ins; diverse community of learners; workspace with desktop, printer/copier, camera, and access to Smart board.
