General Description

The Floater Infant and Toddler Teacher will support teachers to promote and develop infants and toddlers in social, emotional, physical, cognitive, and linguistic growth. They ensure learning environments are nurturing spaces that support the development of all children by providing responsive care, organization, and management. They build strong relationships with families, supporting parent-child relationships key to children’s healthy development, school readiness, and well‑being.

The Floater Teacher is assigned to a classroom, with assignments changing according to the center’s need.

About You
  • A self‑motivated and dedicated person who is excited and passionate about helping infants, toddlers, and families grow in development and education.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Upon hire, agree to enroll and complete a Child Development Associate (CDA) program; tuition assistance may be available depending on funding.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Valid driver’s license, personal vehicle, and liability insurance (or state  public transportation is used).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Child Development Associate (CDA) credentialed in Infant and Toddler (current).
  • Associate Degree or other qualifying education in Child Development, Early Childhood Education, or similar fields.
  • Minimum two (2) years of recent, paid, and successful experience working in a childcare or preschool setting.
  • Knowledge of Head Start Performance Standards.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
  • Adhere to Head Start Program Performance Standards, state licensing requirements, and agency policies and procedures.
  • Maintain an open, friendly, professional relationship with all staff and families, respecting culture, diversity, and ethnicity.
  • Ensure safety of all children and staff by complying with written safety standards.
  • Maintain confidentiality of practices.
  • Provide teaching staff with breaks as assigned by supervisor.
  • Establish and maintain a healthy and safe indoor and outdoor environment for children.
  • Conduct daily playground health and safety monitoring.
  • Set‑up and clean‑up playground daily.
  • Detect and report signs of illness, discomfort, and unusual behavior to teachers or family advocate.
  • Follow process for mandated reporting of suspected child abuse/neglect.
  • Keep classrooms, storage areas, and office space neat and clutter‑free.
  • Follow all health and safety policies and procedures established by the program.
  • Report any safety hazards observed indoors and outdoors.
  • Provide direct supervision and safety of all children.
  • Create a pleasant, inviting atmosphere that supports the ethnic and cultural backgrounds of children.
  • Practice standards of conduct and guidance techniques as defined in the discipline policy and procedures.
  • Assist teachers in implementing curriculum and teaching experience during breaks.
  • Ensure a nurturing and language‑rich interaction that facilitates maximum social and emotional development.
  • Promote and reinforce parental engagement; model appropriate behavior and positive guidance techniques.
  • Assist with food services and classroom needs as requested.
  • Attend meetings, training, and professional development activities.
  • Assure general maintenance and security of facility; assist with inventory of equipment and supplies.
  • Assist with classroom laundry.
  • Conduct daily routine cleaning, including refilling and stocking classroom/restroom supplies.
  • Complete other related activities and duties as assigned.
Physical Demands

Ability to see at normal distance, hear conversations, and use hands to fill out required forms. Lifting infants/toddlers up to 40 pounds, 20 pounds overhead, 40 pounds from waist to shoulder; occasional lifting of 50 pounds required; push/pull up to 50 pounds horizontally. Ability to sit on floor, bend at waist, kneel, or stoop 75% of the time.
